OKC's Tre Mann and Darius Bazley will both be out against the Celtics tonight, which will open up opportunities for Poku. The 7-footer has recorded 12, 14 and 17 points in his last three contests, averages 9.4 points per game this season and should benefit from the attention that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will get from Boston's defense. Most notably, Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart should put the clamps down on SGA, which should shift the scoring load to others in OKC’s lineup.
Using RotoGrinders’ Court IQ tool, I can see that Pokusevski averages 0.45 points per minute with the aforementioned players (and other injured Thunder players) off the court, so if he plays 23 minutes, he should presumably score 10 points and get over this 9.5-point mark. This is one of my favorite plays of the day.
The Warriors have allowed opposing centers to score an average of 27.65 points per game, the highest mark in the NBA. BetQL is projecting Poeltl to drop 13 points and San Antonio’s center is coming off two solid performances in which he dropped 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting against the Grizzlies and then 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting against the Bucks. Overall, Poeltl has gone over 11.5 points in nine of his 13 starts this season and I expect him to make things happen on the interior once again in this game.
Both of these teams are off to horrible defensive starts, but Golden State has been shockingly awful. The Warriors rank 27th in Defensive Rating and have given up an insane 119.2 points per game (most in the entire NBA). Until the Warriors figure out how to prevent easy baskets, I’m going to continue to target opposing centers.
