As the saying goes, defense travels, which is why I could see Rutgers pulling off the upset over Illinois on Saturday. The Illini have had a better second half of conference play, but they are still an undisciplined team and it’s fair to wonder which version of this team is going to show up Saturday night. The Scarlet Knights have the second best defense in all of college basketball, according to KenPom, and are great at forcing teams into mistakes. We’ve also already seen Rutgers come up with some big road wins, beating Purdue in West Lafayette, so why can’t they do the same in Champaign?
Here's a list of the Magic's outright wins as underdogs since the start of 2023: vs. Thunder, at Warriors, at Blazers, vs. Celtics, vs. Pacers, at 76ers, at Wolves, at Hornets, vs. Nuggets. Pretty impressive. I'll keep riding Orlando until the underdog magic wears off -- see what I did there??? -- especially tonight at home against a Heat squad playing the second game of a back-to-back. I'll play the Magic at DraftKings with its "Up 10 Early Win" promo so that I only need a 10-point lead to cash, but I also like the Magic to win outright at the best price you can find. The Crusaders have won two of their last three Patriot League road games as underdogs and lost by five to American in overtime the last time they played. Holy Cross forward Gerrale Gates dropped 25 points and nine boards in that first meeting and American will have its hands full defending him (he's a beast). It's also worth noting that HC went just 3-for-13 from 3-point range (23.1%) in the first matchup and that won't happen again. Freshman Crusader guard Will Batchelder recently tied the all-time Holy Cross record for 3s made in a game with eight and he's going to make an impact from the perimeter as he gets more comfortable in conference play. As you can tell, I'm not biased at all even though I'm an HC alum. LET'S GO CROSS!
