Thunder G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+210, BetMGM)

Nikola Jokic sits atop the MVP odds boards right now at -130 on BetMGM and for very good reason. He’s been the league’s best player for the past few seasons -- yes, even last year when Joel Embiid won the award -- and he is likely to continue to be the favorite for the next few years to come.  

However, at -130, I think we’ve missed the window on getting any value on the Joker, so while I think he wins, I’m going to make the case for a few other players down the board. 

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has the second-shortest odds after ranking second in the league in scoring with 31.1 points per game and 13th in assists with 6.5 per game. He’s the best player on a team that is only 1.5 games behind the top spot in the West and has brought the Thunder back to prominence after years of being a cellar dweller. SGA is also flashy, fun to watch and gives fans highlight-reel plays on a nightly basis. In other words, he is constantly catching the attention of voters. 

Depending on who you talk to, voter fatigue might have played a role in Embiid taking home the MVP award last season over Jokic, who won the award back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. If that happens again and voters decide they don’t want to give the award to Jokic for the third time in the last four years, SGA is the next player up to take home the hardware. 

Longshot Bet To Win NBA MVP

Knicks G Jalen Brunson (+8000, BetRivers)

Brunson taking home the award is a long shot, but he’s having the best year of his career and has the Knicks firmly positioned as a top-four team in the East. Brunson is averaging career-best numbers in scoring (27.6 ppg) and assists (6.5), while shooting 48% from the field and 41% from deep.

He carried the Knicks through much of February as the team dealt with injuries, but as it gets healthy, New York has the talent to go on a run and finish the regular season in the No. 2 seed in the West. If that’s the case, Brunson is going to be the main reason for that, causing this number to shrink quite a bit.
