Best 2024 MLB Win Total Picks

Angels Under 72.5 Wins (-110, DraftKings)

I think 72.5 wins is far too high for a team with a roster that does not look like it will be competitive. In a division that also includes the Astros and Rangers, the Angels are sinking fast again and haven't been able to sustain any sort of success in over a decade, even with Shohei Ohtani. I'll gladly bet the under on their win total at 72.5 this season.

The Angels never were able to build a solid roster around Ohtani and Mike Trout, and have consistently failed to identify talent in the pitching department. No matter how good their offense was, they had terrible pitching outside of Ohtani. They still failed to make the postseason, even with two of the best players in baseball.

Now, after losing their two-way superstar, they once again find themselves at a loss. Where do the Angels go from here? Trout is still a very good player, but he is starting to age and you can see it in his play. L.A. still doesn't have an ace pitcher, their bullpen is in shambles, and they are on their fourth manager in five years. Ron Washington is 71 years old, and even though he has had success elsewhere, this is not an easy remodeling project -- it is going to take years to rebuild.

That is, unless ownership wants to fork over money, which they have not shown a willingness to do since signing Ohtani. They have done next to nothing this offseason so far, and I don't anticipate that to change.

Yankees Over 91.5 Wins (-105, DraftKings)

I think this could be the year that New York bounces back in a big way and seriously contends for a championship again. After last season's pathetic showing from the Yankees, everyone is down on them heading into 2024. No matter how much money this team has spent over the last few years, they have not been able to make it work at a high level. I think this could help us. This offseason, they made some good moves that I think will help them take a step in the right direction.

First off, the big trade to acquire superstar Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres will help, and we don't have to spend much time talking about his impact on the team. He gives them a great left-handed bat towards the top of the lineup to protect Aaron Judge.

Judge is another reason why I love the Yankees this season. Yes, that is quite an obvious statement, but I like him this season because he is coming off a down year where he hit just .267 and had only 37 home runs. He was due for regression after his record-breaking 2022 season, but now he has a good chance to bounce back in a big way. Maybe he won't break records, but I expect the outfielder to crush the ball in 2024.

The Yankees' pitching staff includes Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, who has been as consistently good as you can ask for any starter in MLB. Outside of him, there are questions as to the effectiveness of the staff, but ones that I think have serious upside.

Let's start with Carlos Rodon, who was terrible last season after coming over from the San Francisco Giants. I think he was dealing with lingering injuries still when he came back in the middle of the season for New York, and he has been prone to injury his whole career. Now he will be healed up and fresh, which I think grants him a huge upside.

Nestor Cortes also had a down year and was plagued by injury. He's proved he can be a great pitcher when healthy. They also just signed former Cubs ace Marcus Stroman, who started last year on fire but cooled off in the second half. All three offer significant upside behind Cole.

BetQL Model Simulations

The BetQL model has done its first set of simulations for the entire 2024 MLB season, and we can use these results to see what might be a valuable bet in terms of win totals. Our model simulates the season 10,000 times, and the average amount of wins for each team is calculated to find the biggest advantage over what the sportsbooks are currently listing.

Let's take a look at what the model sees as the biggest advantages betting MLB win totals:

National League

Philadelphia Phillies OVER

DraftKings Line: 90.5

BetQL Simulation: 99.03

St. Louis Cardinals OVER

DraftKings Line: 84.5

BetQL Simulation: 92.83

Arizona Diamondbacks UNDER

DraftKings Line: 83.5

BetQL Simulation: 76.69

Chicago Cubs UNDER

DraftKings Line: 84.5

BetQL Simulation: 76.18

The model sees a lot of advantages right now in the National League, starting with the Philadelphia Phillies. This is a team that has been to the playoffs and even made a World Series appearance two seasons ago, and it is clear the model thinks they will be right there again as one of the best teams in the league.

There is almost a nine-win difference between the current DraftKings line and the model's projections, so this was one of the largest advantages it has found. Clearly, the model also sees a bounce-back season from the Cardinals after they were disappointing last season, projecting almost 93 wins compared to DK's 84.5 line.

The model is also fading the Diamondbacks after their surprise run to the World Series last year, projecting about 77 wins vs. the DK line at 83.5.

Last but not least, my Chicago Cubs are projected at just 76 wins compared to DK's 84.5 line. That makes me sad, but, hey, who am I to argue with the model when it wins so much for us?

American League

Detroit Tigers OVER

DraftKings Line: 80.5

BetQL Simulation: 87.59

Houston Astros UNDER

DraftKings Line: 92.5

BetQL Simulation: 84.58

Not nearly as many advantages here in the AL, but there were a couple that stood out immediately. The model loves the Detroit Tigers and all of their young prospects, projecting a whopping 87.6 wins compared to the line of 80.5. If the Tigers win 88 games next season, it would be one of the biggest storylines in baseball with that kind of turnaround. Still, we just need them to get to 81 here.

The model is also playing a dangerous game fading the Houston Astros, who have been a wagon over the last several seasons. It only sees them winning about 85 games, far lower than the DK line of 92.5. It would be about time they didn't dominate the AL.

More About MLB Win Totals

What are MLB Win Totals?

In the MLB, Win Totals are a predictive figure set by sportsbooks, representing the expected number of victories a team will secure throughout the regular season. This number encapsulates the combined wins and losses, essentially acting as a benchmark for the team's overall performance. Sportsbooks meticulously analyze team strengths, player dynamics, and various influencing factors to arrive at these Win Totals.

Let's break it down with an example. If the New York Yankees have a Win Total set at 93.5, sportsbooks are essentially saying, "Will the Yankees win 94 games or more, or will they fall short?" It's a tantalizing prospect for bettors, providing a season-long investment that keeps you engaged from Opening Day until the final pitch of the regular season.

How Do You Bet On MLB Win Totals?

Betting on MLB Win Totals is like predicting the future, but with a bit more science and a dash of luck. Sportsbooks release these Win Totals well before the season kicks off, and savvy bettors seize the opportunity to capitalize on what they believe is an over or underestimation of a team's potential.

Here's the drill: If you're bullish on a team exceeding their Win Total, you'd place an "Over" bet. On the flip side, if you foresee them falling short, you'd go for the "Under." Once the regular-season concludes, the wins are tallied up, and if your prediction aligns with reality, congratulations, you've got a winning ticket!

For instance, if you put your money on the Los Angeles Dodgers with an Over bet on a Win Total of 98.5, and they rack up 100 wins, you're celebrating a victory.

So, there you have it – MLB Win Totals in a nutshell. A thrilling, season-long adventure awaits for those who dare to predict the future of their favorite teams. Will you make the right call? The diamond is waiting!
