Pitching wins championships. Luckily for the Mets, they arguably have the two best pitchers in their rotation now: Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. They also added 2021 All-Star Chris Bassitt and will likely also feature high-upside starters Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco. They’ll also have a well-rounded lineup with Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha and James McCann now in town and Robinson Cano coming back from his year-long suspension. I think Francisco Lindor rebounds from his struggles last season and Pete Alonso is one of the game’s best power hitters right in the middle of the lineup. With Edwin Diaz, Trevor May and Adam Ottavino at the back end of their bullpen, I’m comfortable with where this team is headed into the season and know Steve Cohen won’t be afraid to make a splash before the trade deadline if his team needs any help. The Dodgers and Braves have scary lineups, but with deGrom and Scherzer at the top of their rotation, New York will be very hard to beat in a playoff series.
The Red Sox are going to win the World Series this season and you can’t tell me otherwise. This team almost got to the World Series last season and they’ve only gotten better since then. With the addition of Trevor Story, this team is on a rocketship to the moon. Yes, Chris Sale is injured, what else is new, but it sounds like the team is confident he can make a fairly quick recovery. When he’s back, watch out because the Red Sox are going to dominate this year.
With the Blue Jays (+900) and Yankees (+900) ahead of them in the World Series odds, it's like people forgot that the Rays won 100 games last year, most in the American League, while cruising to the AL East title and their third playoff appearance in three seasons. They're returning the same lineup that tied for the third-most homers and fourth-most steals in the AL last year, plus they'll get a full season from Wander Franco near the top. With a strong rotation led by Shane McClanahan and featuring the upside of Shane Baz, and one of the AL's top bullpens last year, the Rays are a great value to return to their second World Series (lost to the Dodgers in 2020) in the last three years.
