How to Bet The 2023 Masters

The 2023 Masters Tournament will take place at historic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia from April 6-9. As the first of four men’s golf majors, it will attract most of the world’s best golfers who will battle it out for their share of $15 million, including $2.7 million and the coveted Green Jacket for the winner.

Scottie Scheffler won that most famous jacket in sports last year and here’s a list of some other recent winners that are playing in this year’s event: Hideki Matsuyama (2021), Dustin Johnson (2020), Tiger Woods (2019), Patrick Reed (2018), Sergio Garcia (2017), Danny Willett (2016) and Jordan Spieth (2015).

When betting on this course, it’s important to look at certain types of data. For example, second shots are of utmost importance at Augusta. Per Masters.com, ten of the last 11 Masters winners have ranked 7th or better in Greens In Regulation, including Scheffler (T5) last year and five of them have ranked first or second in that particular metric. Not only that, but 36% of Masters’ champions overall Strokes Gained came from approach play. No other aspect of the game is more important here, so keep that in mind before placing your bets.

Top Finishing Position Picks For The Masters

BetQL’s predictive PGA model takes into account overall player performance, recent form, course strengths and weaknesses per player and sportsbook odds. It has been developed and tested throughout previous seasons and has compiled historical data from 25+ years of golfer and course history. Note: odds presented below come from BetQL’s PGA Model. Star ratings are on 1-5 scale (1 being least valuable, 5 being most valuable).

After running our PGA Model, these particular finishing position bets are standing out with the most value on the board.

Tiger Woods To Miss The Cut (+160, BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Per usual, Tiger’s odds are completely mispriced this week. We're giving him a .000006% chance to win this tournament and don't project him to make the cut, either. However, you can bet on him to miss the cut at +160 at BetMGM right now! Don't waste any more time!

Tyrrell Hatton Top 40 Finish (-185, FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Known as one of the best putters on Tour for years, Hatton also currently ranks 10th on Tour in SG: Approach The Green. He’s made the cut here in four of six opportunities with a high of T18, but based on his current form, he's a great bet to finish in the Top 40 and should have odds longer than -400 according to our numbers.

Xander Schauffele Top 10 Finish (+225, BetRivers) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is Schauffele’s sixth Masters start and he’s enjoyed some solid success at Augusta, finishing T2 in 2019 and T2 in 2021. He’s coming off a surprising missed cut in last year’s edition, but his well-rounded game and previous rounds here make him a solid value to finish in the Top 10.

Will Zalatoris Top 20 Finish (+130, DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If the past is any indication, Zalatoris will be an annual contender at this event. In his first two starts he finished 2nd and T6. In his first 10 Major appearances, Zalatoris has a very impressive three runner-up finishes as part of six Top 10 showings. Getting him at +130 to finish in the Top 20 seems like a fantastic idea.

Rory McIlroy Top 5 Finish (+170, DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐

The four-time Major champion will be making his 15th Masters appearance and has been remarkably consistent, finishing in the Top 10 in seven of the last nine years. Last year, he miraculously holed out a bunker shot on hole 72 to finish 2nd, his best finish ever here. Will he make some magic happen this week? There's a great chance of that happening.

Jon Rahm To Win (+950, FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

With three wins already in 2023, Rahm is perhaps the hottest golfer in the world right now and he’s been awesome at The Masters, making the cut in all six starts with four Top 10 finishes. He's simply the best golfer in the world right now.

Top 3 Masters Winner Sleeper Picks From BetQL

Consider these sleeper picks to win The Masters.

1. Russell Henley (+4019, 2.43%) ⭐⭐: Henley has made the cut five straight times at The Masters and has a career-best finish of T11 in 2017. With four PGA Tour wins to his name, our model is giving him a 2.43% chance to win this week. He currently ranks 2nd on Tour in Driving Accuracy, so that could play in his favor this week. Lock him in at +13000 at DraftKings.

2. Aaron Wise (+5147, 1.91%) ⭐⭐: Wise finished 17th in his only Masters appearance back in 2019 and he’s coming off his best season on Tour. Ranking 3rd in Total Putting, 6th in Putting Average and 7th in Putts Per Round, Wise has shown that he has the ability to exceed expectations on the greens this season. Get +10000 odds on him to win at BetRivers.

3. Brian Harman (+7495, 0.13%) ⭐⭐: Ranking 7th in Scrambling and 8th in Driving Accuracy, Harman is having a well-rounded year based on his shot-tracking analytics and also ranks 16th in Scoring Average. He’s mispriced on FanDuel, who has him at +19000 to win.

Top 3 Masters Winner Fades From BetQL’s PGA Model

1. Tiger Woods (+6337611, .000006%): Per usual, Tiger’s odds are completely mispriced this week. Getting odds as short as +4000 at BetMGM, our model’s projection indicates that you should stay away from him, even if it’s fun to bet on the G.O.A.T.

2. Phil Mickelson (+2024641, .00005%): Mickelson is completely past his prime, but has odds as short as +15000 at BetRivers. Again, our model’s projection is giving him minute odds to win this tournament, so don’t fall into the trap.

3. Jordan Spieth (+10107, .01%): With odds as short as +1300 at Caesars, our model suggests avoiding Spieth at The Masters. We’re giving him a .01% chance to win; don’t forget that the 2015 Masters winner missed the cut here last year and is not the dominant golfer he was once expected to become.

My Masters Betting Picks

Our official BetQL PGA Model picks are above, but I'm on these particular bets.

Collin Morikawa To Win (20/1): Morikawa ranks 3rd on Tour and 1st in this field in SG: Approach The Green, so this course should play right into his strengths. He’s gone 3-for-3 in terms of making the cut here at Augusta and finished in solo 5th last year. I love his price on one of the best ball-strikers in the world.

Xander Schauffele To Win (22/1): Schauffele ranks 9th on Tour in SG: Approach the Green and has a solid track record at this event, where he finished T2 in 2019 and T3 in 2021. Schauffele's cerebral approach makes him a solid bet in any tournament, but I especially like him to show up on this stage.

My 2023 Masters Sleeper Picks

Tyrrell Hatton To Win (50/1): Known as one of the best putters on Tour for years, Hatton also currently ranks 10th on Tour in SG: Approach The Green. He’s made the cut here in four of six opportunities with a high of T18, but based on his current form, I’ll take a shot on him.

Bubba Watson (100/1): The lefty loves this course, having won the Green Jacket in 2012 and 2014. He’s made the cut five straight times and I’m going to target him for some Top 20 and Top 40 bets as well. This isn't worth a full unit, but definitely worth a sprinkle.

What is a good 2023 Masters Betting Strategy?

  • Do your research. Before you place any bets, it is important to do your research and understand the golfers you are betting on. Look at their past performances, their current form, and the course they are playing on.
  • Betting on favorites is not always the best option. While the favorites are often the most likely to win, they are also the least profitable to bet on. Instead, look for golfers who are in good form and who have a good chance of beating the odds.
  • Be patient. Betting on golf is a long-term game. Don't expect to win every bet you make. Just keep betting on golfers you believe in and eventually you will start to see a profit.
  • Be disciplined. It is important to stick to your betting strategy and not get carried away. If you start chasing losses, you will quickly lose all of your money.
  • Know when to quit. If you are on a losing streak, it is important to know when to quit. Don't keep betting just to try to win back your losses. Just take a break and come back to it later.

Following these tips will help you improve your chances of winning when betting on golf.
