The Open Championship always brings some much-needed excitement to what can be a slow sports calendar. This year, the 151st Open Championship will be played from July 20-23 at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, Wirral, England.
The last time the Open was held at this course, Rory McIlroy won the Claret Jug in 2014. And Cameron Smith won the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews with a score of 20-under par, so it's no surprise that both golfers are listed among the favorites to win the 2023 Open Championship:
The top five favorites to win the 2023 Open Championship:
1. Rory McIlroy +700
2. Scottie Scheffler +750
3. Jon Rahm +1100
4. Cameron Smith +1400
several tied at +2000 odds
As usual, the sportsbooks are coming strong with special Open promotions like odds boosts, winner insurance, “bet & gets” and more, so let’s take a look at some of the best sportsbook promos that you should be taking advantage of this week. We’ll also take a look at the BetQL model’s picks to win the 2023 Open Championship and how you can use those in the promos below to get even more value.

FANDUEL: Open Winner Top 20 Insurance
Opt in and place an outright Open winner bet and if your golfer does not win but finishes in the top 20, get a refund in bonus bets up to $25. Scottie Scheffler (+650) and Rory McIlroy (+750) are neck-and-neck atop most odds boards this week to win the Open, so either would be a fine choice for this promo to maximize your chances at getting your stake back if they don’t win. Personally, I'm saving those two for other promos this week and looking down the odds board a bit here because the insurance cutoff is top 20, and taking Patrick Cantlay at +2200. Not only does he have a great shot at finishing top 20, but he can also win this thing.
BETMGM: Open Winner Top 20 Insurance
Same as FanDuel but with a higher max: Opt in and place an outright Open winner bet and if your golfer does not win but finishes in the top 20, get a refund in bonus bets up to $50. If you were torn on Scottie Scheffler (+750) or Rory McIlroy (+750) on FanDuel, take Rory at +750 on FD and Scheffler at +750 on BetMGM to get the highest odds. And if you do the max of $50 on one guy here and $25 on FD, you could double-up on the other in a different promo below. However, for the BetMGM promo, I would again opt for someone further down the odds board with the lenient top-20 insurance in play, like Xander Schauffele (+2500).
BETRIVERS: Open Winner Top 10 Insurance
Less room for error here to get the insurance, but the idea is the same as FanDuel's promo above: Opt in and place an outright Open winner bet and if your golfer does not win but finishes in the top 10, get a refund in bonus bets up to $25. The strategy also remains the same here with Scheffler and McIlroy both solid bets to finish in the top 10, if not win. Personally, I grabbed Scheffler +750 under the "enhanced offering" section, which is higher than the regular offering but with no other difference. Either would be a fine choice for this promo to maximize your chances at getting your stake back if they don’t win, but you may want to diversify your picks (and get the highest odds possible) if you’re playing multiple insurance promos, including the one below.
CAESARS: Open Winner Top 5 Insurance
Notice a theme here? Opt in and place an outright Open winner bet and you'll get a bonus bet equal to 200% of your stake (up to $50) if your golfer loses but finishes in the top five. This insurance promo is obviously harder than the two versions above because of the top-five requirement to trigger insurance, but you also stand to double your original stake if your golfer finishes second through fifth. In addition to Scheffler and McIlroy for these insurance promos, you might consider diversifying further with Jon Rahm (+1200), BetQL’s pick to win this weekend. Regardless, for Caesars, you’ll want to go with the one you’re most confident can finish in the top five to give yourself the best shot at that 2x insurance.
DRAFTKINGS: Open Winner Odds Surge
Opt in and get a token to add +300 odds to any golfer to win the Open. The best strategy is usually to add the surge to a golfer with relatively short odds for the biggest boost percentage-wise. For example, with Scheffler +700 at DK, adding +300 would make him +1000 to win the Open for a 43% boost. You could use this surge to double-down on one of your “insurance” golfers above, or to hedge a bit, which is what I did by boosting Rory McIlroy from +750 to +1050 since I already had money on Scheffler.
