Friday’s NHL action has a bunch of tantalizing prop bets to sink your teeth into, including picks focusing on two teams’ home openers. Here are the best prop bets for Friday, Oct. 14.
New York Rangers vs. Winnipeg Jets, 8 p.m. ET
Winnipeg Jets to win and over 4.5 goals (+125)
On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets open their season at home against the New York Rangers. Winnipeg won its previous four home openers, scoring five goals twice and four in another. They will be chomping at the bit, ready to host a Rangers team that played in Minnesota on Thursday evening.
The Rangers had their way with Minnesota, beating them 7-3 and scoring three goals in the first period.
However, the Rangers arrived in Winnipeg in the wee hours of Friday morning and were 1-3 last season in the second of back-to-back encounters against Central Division teams.
It’s still only the Rangers’ third game, but head coach Gerard Gallant might decide to give Igor Shesterkin the night off.
Even if Shesterkin starts, the red-eyed Rangers won’t have the energy or pep to hold off an amped Jets team gung ho about the prospect of opening their season in front of a comparatively loud home fanbase.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Columbus Blue Jackets, 7 p.m. ET
Nikita Kucherov Over 1.5 points (+185)
Nikita Kucherov had one helper in Tampa’s opener on broadway. The Lightning lost 3-1 in a disappointing game against the Rangers and will be looking for a bounce-back performance in Columbus.
Kucherov notched one assist against the Rangers but wasn’t playing at the level everyone has come to expect.
He should have a much better outing in Columbus on Friday night. Look for Kucherov to stamp his authority against the Blue Jackets and notch at least two points.
Kucherov also represents excellent value if you’re looking for an Art Ross Trophy candidate. He scored 69 points in 47 games after returning from injury last season.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Detroit Red Wings, 7 p.m. ET
Detroit Red Wings to Score First Goal (-149)
The refurbished Red Wings start their season on Friday when they host the Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Maple Leafs with 19 seconds remaining on opening night.
Detroit should come out of the gate like gangbusters in their home opener. They have a markedly improved roster to work with, including the additions of David Perron, Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik, Oli Maata, and Ville Husso.
Husso enjoyed an excellent 2021-22 season between the pipes for the Blues and will be excited about taking the No. 1 role at Detroit. Look for him to have an outstanding season opener, which should translate to the Red Wings potting the opening goal.
