Boston is on the back end of a back-to-back, so that has to be taken into consideration here. The offense was inefficient for the Bruins last season. They ranked 15th in goals per game and second in shots per game, but have turned that around thus far in 2022. They scored five goals in their season opener and six goals in their second game of the season. Defense and goaltending were very good for Boston last season. The team ranked fourth in goals against per game and third in shots against per game.

For Ottawa, they are still winless on the season. They are off to a poor start offensively. Ottawa scored one goal in the season opener and two goals in their second game. Defensively, the team has been decent enough. Goalie Anton Forsberg allowed two goals on 34 shots faced in the season opener and three goals on 32 shots faced in the second game of the season.

The Canucks are off to a slow start to the season with their offense particularly struggling, scoring only 2.5 goals per game. Nothing they are doing seems to be working, so they will need to figure it out quickly after a poor start to the season. The defense has been just as bad, allowing 4.0 GPG and allowing a ton of shots. Thatcher Demko has struggled to start the season with a .873 save percentage and a 3.64 goals-against average on 55 shots.

The Blue Jackets entered the season with the hope of having one of the league’s best offenses but through three games, they have only scored five goals. It's been a massive disappointment to say the least. The defense has also been bad, allowing 4.67 GPG. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins needs to be better from his first start of the season where he allowed five goals on only 25 shots.

TREND: The Blue Jackets are 12-4 SU in non-conference games while at home over the last two years.

Anaheim showed some flashes of their young talent on opening night with five goals, but since then, they have really struggled offensively. They are a young group, so they have time to figure it out. The defense has been far worse. They are allowing 5.50 goals per game, which is just insane. With the team playing on a back-to-back, the Ducks will most likely look to backup goaltender Anthony Stolarz to step up in the net. He has only played 20 minutes this season and allowed two goals on 11 shots.

The Devils have really struggled on defense to start the year. They have allowed 10 goals already in just two games, which is not a way to win. Goaltender Vitek Vanecek needs to bounce back after allowing five goals on only 22 shots in his first start of the season. The offense has been awful too, only scoring four goals in two games.

TREND: Dallas Eakins is 22-51 SU when coaching only his second game in five days while with the Anaheim Ducks.

The Flyers are off to a shocking start to the year where they are actually winning games. Of course, those wins came against two terrible teams, but they are wins nonetheless. The offense has been hot out of the gate, scoring 4.00 GPG and eight goals in their first two games. The defense has also been stellar, allowing just 2.00 GPG and four on the season so far. Goaltender Carter Hart has been great to start the year, with a 1.00 GAA and .940 SV%.

The Lightning have not gotten off to a great start this season. They have been on the road in all three of their games, which doesn't help matters. The defense has really struggled, giving up 3.67 GPG so far and 11 goals in three games. The offense has been decent, but not spectacular, scoring 2.67 GPG so far.

TREND: Jon Cooper is 210-110 SU after a game where they failed to cover the spread while coaching the Lightning.

No one has been worse to start the year than the San Jose Sharks, who have been a total disaster on the ice. The offense has been practically nonexistent, scoring just 1.50 GPG through four games. The defense has been bad as well, allowing 3.50 GPG. That is no way to win in the NHL, and that is why they are an abysmal 0-4 at the time of this writing.

The Islanders have been much better, scoring 4.00 GPG on the season and actually having a pulse on offense. The defense for New York has been fantastic as well, allowing just 2.00 GPG through two games. It's a short sample size, but they have been far better than San Jose. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin has been great in net, with a 1.52 GAA and a .941 SV%.

TREND: The New York Islanders are 26-7 when playing against a team with a losing record in the first half of the season over the last three years.

The Sabres enter the season with a young core that looks to catapult the team into the playoffs fueled by an offense that is scoring 3.50 goals per game. That has been the main reason they have been competitive to start the season. The defense has also played well, allowing only five goals in the first two games.

The Oilers enter the season with one of the best teams in the Western Conference led by an offense that has scored eight goals in the first two games. Once again, it is the defense that is the problem with this team. They are allowing 3.50 goals per game. Goaltender Jack Campbell, who the Oilers acquired in the offseason, has struggled in the net, allowing seven goals on 47 shots.

TREND: Dan Granato is 11-6 ATS coming off a home loss against a division rival while coaching the Buffalo Sabres.

Two teams that have been red-hot out of the gates collide when the Golden Knights take on the Flames. Las Vegas has been far better than most people anticipated to start the year. That has been much to do with starting goaltender Logan Thompson, a rookie who has a 1.5 GAA and .947 SV% to begin the year. His play has helped a Knights team that is scoring 3.33 GPG.

The Flames are also off to a hot start, but that was much more expected. Calgarys offense has been one of the best in hockey so far, scoring a remarkable 4.50 GPG. They have been lighting up the scoreboard in wins over the Avalanche and Oilers, but the defense needs work. they have also allowed 3.0 GPG to opposing teams, but those teams they faced both have a great offense, so maybe it was expected.

TREND: The Vegas Golden Knights are 11-16 SU after a division game over the last two years.

Neither of these teams have gotten off to great starts like they wanted in 2022. For LA, their defense has been awful to begin the season. That's very unlike the Kings, who usually have a great defense. They are allowing a whopping 4.67 goals per game to start the year. With the Kings playing the second game of a back-to-back, they will look for backup netminder Calvin Peterson to step up, as he has allowed six goals on 35 shots to start the season.

For Nashville, it's never good to start the season, win two games against a bad team, and immediately lose two straight to the same division rival. Opposite of the Kings, it's the offense that has yet to show up for the Preds. Their offense is scoring only 2.25 goals per game and only has two goals in each of the last two games.

TREND: John Hynes is 17-3 SU when playing against a team with a winning percentage between 25%-40% in the first half of the season while coaching the Nashville Predators.
