One of the most underrated teams coming into this season was the New Jersey Devils. I love the young pieces they have on this team, and so far, they have been absolutely lighting people up on the offensive side of things. New Jersey is averaging over 40 shots per game to start the season, peppering opposing goaltenders and putting up numbers on the scoreboard. The defense has been great as well, but the goaltending has been questionable. That is their only real weakness so far.
The Capitals have been about as average as it gets this season. They are scoring just over three goals per game and giving up about 3.50 a game, so not much to take away from there. They have been getting outshot on average 29 to 32 per game, so they haven't been controlling play very much, and that could be trouble against a Devils team that dominates pace of play.
PICK: I like the Devils at home at a short number on the ML.
The Stars have been absolutely crushing to start this season, scoring four goals per game while allowing just 1.60. They have been crushing their opponents, but when you dive into some stats, they have been very lucky so far offensively. Dallas is actually getting outshot on almost a nightly basis, 28 to 33, and their margins of victory have been large despite that. Jake Oettinger has been phenomenal in net, and should be the early favorite for the best goaltender, but the offensive play so far is not sustainable in my opinion.
The Senators are no longer an afterthought, and we need to start taking them seriously as a team that can play with the big boys. The offense has been fantastic, scoring over four goals per game behind Brady Tkachuk's great start to the season. The weakness here is goaltending and defense, but the offensive play has overcome that to this point.
PICK: It is very hard to pick against the Stars because of their great goalie and how lucky they have been, but at some point, their lack of puck control will come back to haunt them. I'll take Ottawa at a short number on the ML.
Here's a game that should soar over the total of 6.5 with how these teams have been playing to start the year. Pittsburgh has been an offensive machine, scoring over five goals per game and taking 39 shots per contest. They will be hammering the Edmonton net with pucks tonight, and that is something you can always count on. Their defense, however, is giving up a whopping 35 shots per game, but allowing just 2.20 goals against. Against Connor McDavid and friends, that may change.
The Oilers have been pretty disappointing to start the season, and once again, it's because their defense and goaltending has struggled. Going up against this Penguins team is a recipe for disaster for them right now, and the offense will have to take advantage of the amount of shots Pittsburgh lets up per game.
PICK: The juggernaut that is the Penguins offense should be able to score almost at will against this porous Oilers defense and goaltending. Edmonton will try to keep pace, and I think they will have success offensively, but it won't be quite enough. Give me the over 6.5 here as my best bet, but I'll also have a little on Pittsburgh at plus-money on the ML.
The Blues are on a three game win streak to start their season as they travel to Winnipeg to take on the Jets. Neither one of these teams has really impressed me so far, even with St. Louis starting out so well. Like the Stars, the Blues have been winning despite being outplayed on most nights. Their offense is averaging just 25 shots each night, among the lowest in the league, but they are averaging close to four goals per game. Luck plays a factor here, and they have been getting great goaltending from Jordan Binnington.
The Jets just haven't been good. Their offense has been putrid, scoring just 2.40 goals per game and shooting around 29 shots per game. They aren't getting it done on that end, but the defense and goaltending haven't been either. Their allowing over three goals per game and giving up almost 33 shots per contest.
PICK: I don't like either of these teams, as neither one has been impressive offensively. I'll take the under here at 6.
Here's a great match to start the nightcap. The Maple Leafs and Golden Knights have been two of the better teams in hockey to start out the season. Toronto has been an aggravating team at times, like when they lose to the Coyotes at home, but they have been dominating the ice. The Maple Leafs are taking 34 shots per game and allowing just 26, so they have been controlling the puck with ease. They are actually getting some good goaltending right now as well, so they are very dangerous.
Vegas has also been impressive in their own right. I didn't like their goaltending coming into the year, but they have proved me wrong, allowing just over two goals per game. The offense has been very impressive as well, taking 34 shots per game and scoring over three goals per game.
PICK: This is a toss-up in most places right now, so I'll take the Maple Leafs here. I just think they are the better team on paper, and as a toss-up, I'll ride with them.
The Hurricanes are better than their 3-1-1 record indicates. They have been owning the ice, averaging almost 36 shots per game and allowing just 28, yet their overall record is basically 3-2. The offense is fantastic, and the defense is fantastic. Carolina has been outstanding so far.
Now, here's where things get very weird. Statistically and record-wise, Vancouver has been a total disaster. They are 0-4-2 and are allowing over four goals per game while scoring just under three. That all makes sense, but what doesn't make sense is their shot totals. They actually haven't been destroyed in puck possession like you might expect from a team with all that going against them, but instead, they are taking slightly more shots per game than they are allowing.
PICK: I just can't back the Canucks right now until they actually win a game. They haven't been as bad as their record and some stats show, but it is hard to take them. Give me Carolina -1.5 on the PL.
