The Lightning are hoping to appear in their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup Final but are hoping to rebound after losing the first game of the season to the New York Rangers in a 3-1 defeat. The Lightning were carried by their offense last season, scoring 3.48 goals per game, but they struggled in their opening night game. They will be hoping that turns around here.

The Blue Jackets made the move of the offseason by signing Johnny Gaudreau but lost by three goals in their opening night game. The Blue Jackets had high hopes entering the season but that loss was a disaster to start. They looked completely listless in Game 1 of the year, and that certainly needs to change. The defense also is a huge problem, allowing plenty of open shots at the net, and it cost them.

Jon Cooper is 209 - 110 after 1 or more consecutive losses while coaching the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Canadiens were the worst team in the NHL last year but have already kicked off the year strong with an opening night win. They expected to be a bottom dweller once again in the Eastern Conference, and that still may be the case when all is said and done, but that opening win over Toronto shows glimmers of hope. Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson, and Nick Suzuki scored three goals and two assists to lead the top line.

The Red Wings will start their season hoping to improve on both ends of the ice and finally reach the playoffs. The defense of Detroit really let them down last season, and they will be banking on a rebound performance in 2022. They allowed a massive 3.78 goals per game last season, so it will be hard to get worse. The offense should improve, and has improved over the last few years.

The Montreal Canadiens are 8 - 26 first half of the season over the last two years.

The Rangers got off to a good start, defeating the Lightning in their first game, and then taking out the Minnesota Wild last night. They have won their first two games of the season, and they will be going for three straight here when they visit the Winnipeg Jets. One has to wonder if playing three games in four nights might add a fatigue factor to this game for them.

The Jets finished with a winning record last season, but they ended up missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. This will be opening night for them in 2022, and they will be looking to get off to a hot start against New York. They had a pretty quiet offseason that didn't really see them make many moves, so they will be running it back with mostly the same group with some new faces mixed in.

New York is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games against Winnipeg.

The Hurricanes won their opening game where they were big favorites facing the Columbus Blue Jackets. Last season the team gave up the fewest goals in the NHL and their defense held Columbus to only one goal in their season opener. They have extremely high expectations in 2022, and they started off the season by living up to those in a massive win.

After losing to the Predators 4-1 in the opener, the Sharks lost to them 3-2 for a second game in a row. They took a 2-1 lead early in the second period and were shut out the rest of the way. It has been a very rough stretch for the Sharks organization. Last season the Sharks ranked 30th in the NHL in goals per game and they have only scored three goals in their first two games.

Rod Brind Amour is 61 - 30 in non-conference games while coaching the Carolina Hurricanes.
