A playoff rematch at Madison Square Garden is just what we needed to kick off the new NHL season. Tampa Bay is once again favored to win the Eastern Conference with how dominant they have been over the last several years. The departure of veteran forward Ondrej Palat and defenseman Ryan McDonagh leaves some holes to fill for the defending Eastern Conference champions, but the core of this team is still intact. If there is a team that can possibly challenge Tampa Bay, it may be the New York Rangers, equipped with true game-changers at all three levels. Two of the very best goaltenders in the game will meet up on Tuesday night in Andrei Vasilevskiy of Tampa Bay and New York’s reigning Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin.

It was a pretty poor preseason for both teams. Tampa dropped its first four games, while the Rangers ended 2-3-1, but that is preseason. Now that the regular season is ramping up, we are going to see some serious hockey. One of the biggest strengths of both of these teams last season was the power play, where New York was ranked fourth in the league and Tampa Bay eighth. Avoiding the penalty box will be very important for both of these teams, as many of the same players are back. We have seen that early in the season, officials are more likely to call penalties, so that will be difficult for both teams.

PICK: I like the Rangers in this game at home. A lot of people will like the Lightning, and that is understandable, but New York is healthy right now, and the sharp money is leading me to go with the Rangers. Also, Gerard Gallant is 44-17 SU as a favorite while coaching New York Rangers.

The Golden Knights missed the playoffs last season for the first time in their franchise history with a 43-31-8 record while the Kings reached the playoffs with the third-best record in the Pacific Division, but were eliminated in the first round. Both teams will be looking to rebound after last year, and you can expect a battle out West to close out opening night.

For Las Vegas, an injury-riddled season derailed the team in 2021, but there is hope for 2022. The offense was one of the bright spots last season, scoring 3.20 goals per game, and Jack Eichel, Chandler Stephenson, and Jonathan Marchessault led the way combining for 65 goals and 90 assists between the three of them. The defense is far more questionable. Alec Martinez, Alex Pietrangelo, and Shea Theodore will lead the top two defensive pairings, but the rest of the unit is a big question mark and the depth will be tested, especially with defenseman Shea Weber starting the season on injured reserve. To make matters even worse, goaltender Robin Lehner will also be out for a while, so they will be starting backup Logan Thompson.

As for Los Angeles, they made an unexpected appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season and even pushed the Edmonton Oilers to seven games in round 1. What did them in last season was the offense, which was just not able to get much going throughout the year. Outside of players like Anze Kopitar, they really didn't get much going and scored a measly 2.87 goals per game in 2021. They did sign Kevin Fiala, who is coming off a year where he scored 33 goals and 52 assists and looks to add an immediate spark to the offense. The defense should once again be great, and it is what carried them to the playoffs last season. They allowed 2.83 goals per game last season, one of the best marks in the league. Also, BetQL notes that the Kings are 27-10 SU as a favorite over the last two years.
