Avalanche at Lightning Prediction

Welp, the Rangers won yesterday, but unfortunately, it wasn't by two or more goals. The Wild got 39 shots on goal but could only score a single time. Sometimes, those are breaks we get, but we move on to today's slate.

The Colorado Avalanche will be traveling to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in our first matchup of the day. The Avs have put together another good season, albeit not as good as they had last season. They are averaging 3.02 goals per game and allowing 2.71 per game. They are averaging 33.1 shots per game and allowing 31.3 on their own net. They aren't a bad team, just kind of average up to this point when you compare them to some other teams.

The Lightning are in the same type of boat, except for them, it's been the defense that has taken a step back recently. They are allowing 31.3 shots on their net per game and 3.02 goals, both much higher numbers than they have allowed over their recent Stanley Cup seasons. The offense is still racking up the points, scoring 3.56 goals per game and 32.0 shots on goal each night out there.

MY PICK: Avalanche +105. This is another situation where I feel like both teams are good, but both have their issues. I'll take the plus-money in this type of situation almost every time.

Canucks at Islanders Prediction

For the second game of the night, we'll head to New York, where we will see the Vancouver Canucks traveling to take on the Islanders. Vancouver has been one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL this year, scoring 3.31 goals per game, which is actually pretty good, but allowing a massive 3.94. The Canucks are being outshot 30.6 to 31.6 on average, so they haven't been able to gain the upper hand in puck possession in most games.

The Islanders aren't so great themselves. They come into this game on a four-game winning streak, which I really want to fade. In fact, they are getting outshot by the EXACT same margin as the Canucks each game, 30.6 to 31.6. Their offense is worse, scoring just 2.85 goals per game, one of the lower marks in the NHL. They have gotten some outstanding goaltending which has masked their other failures, allowing just 2.63 goals per game.

MY PICK: Canucks +195. I think the Islanders are frauds, and their poor play has been overshadowed by their excellent goaltending. The Canucks are bad as well, that is for sure, but there is simply no way New York should be laying -225. I'll take a shot at almost 2/1 with Vancouver.
