NHL Picks & Predictions For Today's Games

Maple Leafs at Lightning Prediction

For our first bet of the night, the Toronto Maple Leafs are traveling to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yesterday, we took the Maple Leafs against the other Florida team, and we came out with a nice plus-money winner. The Leafs don't have a ton to play for in this game, as they already locked up a spot in the playoffs, but will want to win as much as possible to keep their seed. Toronto is scoring 3.39 goals per game and allowing 2.68, while also outshooting their opponents 32.3 to 29.4 on average.

The Lightning have also locked up a spot in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but they would probably like to snap this three-game losing streak ahead of the playoffs. Tampa Bay is scoring 3.40 goals per game and allowing 3.10, while also outshooting their opponents 31.8 to 31.6 on average.

MY PICK: Maple Leafs ML (+140, Caesars). This is another situation where the Maple Leafs are getting good plus-money on the road, and even on a back-to-back, it's impossible to not take +140 with them. They are just as good, if not the better hockey team here, so I will take the value at a good number.

Oilers at Avalanche Prediction

For our second pick of the night, the Edmonton Oilers will be on the road against the Colorado Avalanche for a massive showdown that will have real implications for the playoffs. These two teams are separated by just a single point in the West, so seeding is on the line here. The Oilers are currently second in the West at 105 points and have won five straight games heading into this critical contest. Edmonton is scoring 3.98 goals per game and allowing 3.16, while also outshooting their opponents 33.5 to 31.4 on average.

The Avalanche are the defending champs, and they find themselves just a single point behind the Oilers for the West's second seed at 104 points. They have also won five games in a row and they have really started to round into form as the playoffs draw closer. Colorado is scoring 3.35 goals per game and allowing 2.73, while also outshooting their opponents 33.4 to 31.1 on average.

MY PICK: Avalanche ML (+100, PointsBet). These teams are pretty much dead even right now in every way, so I'm not sure why the Oilers are favored on the road here. If the books are going to give me even money with the Avs at home, I'll take that almost every time.

Capitals at Bruins Prediction

Our last pick of the night takes us to Boston, where the Washington Capitals will be taking on the Bruins. By just looking at this matchup at a glance, you would think it would be a total blowout, as the Bruins are clearly the better team. However, there is a chance that neither team tonight plays their starters, including Alex Ovechkin for Washington, according to reports. The Capitals are scoring 3.09 goals per game and allowing 3.14, but they are outshooting their opponents 31.1 to 30.9 on average.

Boston has already locked up the No. 1 seed, so the Bruins have nothing to play for here really. Boston also has half its roster listed on the injury report, including Charlie McAvoy, Linus Ullmark, Taylor Hall, Dmitry Orlov and David Krejci. Those are huge losses for Boston if they all are out. Boston is scoring 3.63 goals per game and allowing 2.10, while also outshooting their opponents 33.0 to 29.8 on average.

MY PICK: Capitals ML (+265, FanDuel). If these teams were both playing their starters, I'd be much more hesitant here. However, Boston might not be at full strength here either. If you are going to give me absolutely crazy +265 odds just for Washington to beat a weakened Bruins roster, I'll take the value there. Neither team has anything to play for, but one is getting huge plus-money.
