It seems that every single season in the NFL, one of the biggest question marks is who is going to win the NFC East. This is a division that very rarely has a back-to-back winner, and it is amazing to me how much the four teams in this division change on a year to year basis. You don’t see that in many other divisions in the NFL, I mean, look at the Kansas City Chiefs. They have won the AFC West for nearly a decade straight, which is just insane, and look like nearly a lock to win it again this year.
At the start of the season, the NFC East was essentially a coin flip race between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. The Washington Commanders and New York Giants were afterthoughts, but my goodness, have things changed. Now, it’s the Eagles and Commanders that are nearly a coin flip, with Philly being the slight favorite at -120 odds. It just goes to show you that nobody really knows who should be favored in this division.
Right now over at BetMGM, bettors also can’t seem to put their finger on who will be crowned division champ. According to our friend John Ewing, who works in Data and PR at BetMGM, a majority of bettors are backing the red hot Commanders to win the division: 43.2% of the total tickets written are on Washington to win. However, that is not where the majority of the money is going in this market right now.
The Philadelphia Eagles are garnering a whopping 72.8% of the cash to win the NFC East. Despite that huge handle, the Commanders remain the biggest liability for the sportsbook right now when it comes to winning this division. This is because many people were able to get Washington at a very large number earlier in the season, and would have a large plus money payout if the Commanders were to pull it off.
The Eagles were one of the larger sharp plays to win the division at the start of the season. As you can see with the ticket count, the public has been falling in love with Jayden Daniels and the Commanders as they have been phenomenal so far this season. This happens a lot, with the “talk of the town” team getting a lot of people to bet on them, but many times this does not work out.
The opposite can be said about the Eagles. Many people are not impressed with them, especially head coach Nick Sirriani, and fell off their bandwagon after their early season struggles. Don’t look now, but the Eagles have gotten healthy and have rattled off a few wins, and there is a reason that they are still favored in the market even though people can’t get enough of Daniels.
Let’s be real, Washington would have lost that game against Chicago 9 times out of 10, as Hail Mary’s rarely work. They scored 12 points leading up to that, and if you take away Daniels’ 52-yard prayer, he had a 77.8 passer rating. Granted, the Bears have a great defense, but with his rib injury and that very average performance, it is at least something to watch.
