Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins started out their season with a dominant win over Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in South Beach. The offense will get all of the attention with Tua Tagovailoa's growth at the QB position, along with his new weapon in Tyreek Hill, but what impressed me the most on Sunday was how this defense performed against New England's offense. They completely shut them down, and 2nd-year QB Mac Jones looked dreadful against this Miami D. They held the Pats to 193 passing yards and 78 rushing yards while winning the turnover battle 3-0.

Offensively, major offseason pickup Hill led all receivers with 94 yards, while 2nd-year star WR Jaylen Waddle added 69 yards and a TD. The passing attack was as advertised, but the rushing attack struggled mightily in Game 1. Chase Edmonds had just 25 yards in the contest, something the Dolphins will have to improve on.

Up against the Ravens, this should be a tough challenge for the Miami defense as they look to contend with Lamar Jackson. New head coach Mike McDaniel will have to be creative offensively, as Baltimore will surely look to stifle Tua.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens had the luxury of playing against their former Super Bowl winning QB on Sunday, an aging Joe Flacco that was asked to throw the ball 59 times in the game. That was just fine by Baltimore, as they held New York's offense to just nine points, and they were never threatened in the game at all. The Ravens took a 3-0 lead over the Jets late in the 1st quarter and never looked back en route to their dominant 24-9 win.

Baltimore should be a great team this season, but their one weakness is at WR, where they have almost no weapons for QB Lamar Jackson to work with. It is clear that Jackson hasn't fully bought in to the Ravens, as he refused a massive contract extension before the season began. He will play out the final year of his contract without a deal, and he will be betting on himself to have a great year to get the money he believes he deserves. He started out that campaign nicely going 17-for-30 for 213 yards and 3 TD.

My Prediction

This game is lined very close at the time of this writing, with Baltimore opening as a 3.5-point favorite. While it is tempting to take the field goal with the Dolphins here, I find this number to be a bit short. I think the Ravens are the better team, and I could see them winning by a touchdown or more at home in Baltimore. Lamar is out to prove something in 2022, and I think Tua still has a ways to go as a passer. I saw him throw too many ducks on Sunday, especially with his passes to the outside. New England didn't make him pay, but I think Baltimore could.

Playing the Ravens to -6.5 on the alternative spread could be a good play at plus money.
