Washington Commanders Preview

Ugh, here we go again with another prime time clunker. We started off Thursday nights on Amazon with such a great matchup between the Chiefs and Chargers, but ever since then, it has been pretty painful to watch. Nevertheless, this is NFL football guys, and we are all going to watch regardless. Both teams come into this game on losing streaks, hoping this short week will give them a chance to rebound quickly. For Washington, they are 1-4 on the season and have fallen way behind the rest of their division by a large margin. The Philadelphia Eagles are 5-0, the Dallas Cowboys are 4-1 and the New York Giants are also 4-1. When asked about this dilemma, head coach Ron Rivera said the difference was at quarterback, which became a viral moment.

The thing is though, Carson Wentz really hasn't been THAT bad. He isn't good, to be sure, but he also hasn't been atrocious either. Wentz finished his Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans with over 350 yards passing and two touchdowns. He did have a game-ending interception that killed his team, but he also put up the stats that showed the loss wasn't all on him. Washington is 0-4 SU and ATS since Week 1, and are 5-8-1 as road underdogs since 2020. They haven't been very good in this spot for years, but Chicago is a special kind of bad.

Washington does have an offense that can put up yards and points, but they haven't been able to put that together to win games. The defense has been very bad, and definitely hasn't helped them at all, but now they get to face Chicago. This will probably be the most winnable game that Washington has played this season, and if they can finally stop making stupid mistakes and play solid football for 60 minutes, they can come out with a win. The question remains if they can even do that, and with the toxicity that surrounds this franchise from the owner on down, I have my doubts.

Chicago Bears Preview

The Bears are 0-2 in the NFC North after losing to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, but they are a team of moral victories in 2022. The point of their season should be seeing growth from the quarterback position to see if Justin Fields is the guy for the job, and he played well against the Vikings in Week 5. He's been pretty bad up to this point of the season, failing to clear 150 yards passing in a majority of his games, but he showed progress. Fields threw for 208 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota, and didn't throw an interception. He'll need to continue that type of play against a poor Washington secondary, but the numbers tell us that is certainly in question.

Chicago lacks any explosive weapons on the outside, and it has resulted in some really bad offensive numbers. The Bears are 27th in points per game, 22nd in yards per play and 31st in yards per game. Their top two receivers combined for 76 yards against Minnesota, as most of the passing attack went to the running backs and tight end. In contrast, Washington's Dyami Brown had 75 yards by himself on one play against the Titans. There is a big difference between these two teams when it comes to offensive talent at the skill positions, and that has shown to this point in the season.

Also, a fun fact that I wanted to include here. The Bears highest paid wide receiver that was active for the Vikings game was rookie third-round pick Velus Jones, making under $1 million. Tyreek Hill on the Dolphins makes more money per year than the entire Chicago Bears WR corps combined. Next season, the Bears will have over $100 million in cap space to spend to improve the team, so they went into this year with the intention of losing games in my opinion. Develop the QB, get a high-draft pick, spend next off-season to bring in some great talent. That should be the plan for Chicago.

My Prediction

Both of these teams are really, really bad overall. Nothing about them is super watchable right now, but we will subject ourselves to it. I actually think the Commanders get the job done here on the road. They have the better offense (somehow), and Chicago would do themselves a favor to lose this game. Try to make Justin Fields have a great performance, but losing while he does that would be fantastic for their franchise.

Give me the Commanders on the ML for plus money.
