49ers at Bears Week 1 Preview and Prediction

Trey Lance and Justin Fields each get set for Year 2 in the NFL

49ers at Bears Preview For Week 1

The San Francisco 49ers made it clear they're moving on to Trey Lance even with the drawn-out process that saw Jimmy Garappolo's future sit in limbo, only to end up with him still on the roster with a new deal as a backup.

The Chicago Bears hope Year 2 for Justin Fields will show massive growth under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and head coach Matt Eberflus.

When these two teams met last year, the Niners ended up winning, 33-22, but Chicago did have a 16-15 lead entering the fourth quarter, before everything fell apart.

San Francisco 49ers

Let's be honest, we know very little about what Trey Lance will look like as a full-time starter in San Francisco. He has the physical tools to succeed in Kyle Shanahan's offense, but there may be some growing pains early in the season.

The Niners (12-8 ATS in 2021 including playoffs) went all the way to the NFC championship game mainly because of their ground game though, going under in 60 percent of their total games, and you can expect a similar approach at least to start the year and take some pressure off Lance early.

The Niners were also third in total defense last season, while Chicago was 24th in total offense, hitting the under in almost 59 percent of their games.

Chicago Bears

Justin Fields is no stranger to growing pains, essentially being handed a complete mess when he came to Chicago, but showed some stability over his last four games in 2021 with an 83.9 passer rating, four touchdowns, and three picks while throwing for over 280 yards in two of those games.

As for their defense, having to watch where Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are every play will be a nightmare, and something this group just won't be equipped for.

My Favorite Pick: Under 41.5

With the under trend we already looked at from San Francisco last year, and the likelihood they'll do that again to start off the year running the ball a ton, coupled with Chicago's still growing offense leans you towards an under here.

Seven of the last eight 49ers games have hit the under as well.
