Oregon at Georgia Prediction For Week 1

Odds, best bets and analysis for this college football matchup

Oregon Ducks

Oregon has been one of the top schools in the country for quite some time now, remaining in contention almost every year dating back to 1994. They have had a few down seasons here and there, but for the most part, this has been a program that has been largely successful for the better part of the last 30 years. They have had two national championship appearances in the last 12 years, which is two more than any other team in the Pac-12 has in that same span. Since 1994 they have been to five Rose Bowls, seven conference championships, and have five Pac-12 Championship game appearances including three in a row. They have boatloads of money and what seems like a never ending stream of top-talent that comes to play for the team that loves to change their uniforms every five minutes to make things more edgy and exciting.

The problem is that they just don't win games that they need to win. Every year since 2015, Oregon has had one loss to a team that finished with a losing record except for 2019, and even that team lost because they didn’t show up against Arizona State until it was too late. To put that into perspective, Clemson hasn't lost to a team with a losing record since 2009. Remarkable, but that's what it takes to become a real national championship contender. They just lost Mario Cristobal to Miami and just hired a 36-year-old with zero head coaching experience coming from Georgia, where he just won a championship coaching a defense full of NFL players. The good news is that there is still a massive talent pool here.

Georgia Bulldogs

They are the reigning national champions, what else do I really need to say about Georgia? After so many years of fielding some of the best and most talented teams in college football, and failing to win it all time and time again, the Bulldogs finally broke the ice barrier and captured the crown. It was finally their turn to have the right mix of players and coaches and the right things fall into place to get that elusive title that they have sought for so long. The best news for them? They are going to continue to be good for a long time to come. Georgia is one of those teams like Alabama or Ohio State, whereas you can lose generational talent and half of your roster, and come back the next year with another wave of the same talent. They are a factory that produces star players.

They lost a ton of players after last year, and there is always going to be somewhat of a letdown coming off of the season they had. The SEC is incredibly deep and good, and everyone will be after Georgia now, so they will get the very best out of their opponents. Still, this is what Georgia is made for. They can win the championship again, and they have the talent to do so. Never underestimate this team, even if most of their players have new faces. They are good. Really good.

Prediction

Georgia in a landslide. Oregon is a great program, and they will be contending at the end of the season for a conference championship, but they simply are no match for the Bulldogs. Homecoming is going to come very quickly for the new Ducks head coach. I'll take Georgia ATS.
