Florida State's 2024 season has spiraled into an unthinkable disaster, making them the first preseason top-10 team in history to start 0-3 against unranked opponents. Following a strong 13-1 campaign in 2023, the Seminoles were expected to be contenders this year, but their start has shocked fans and bettors alike. The latest blow came in Week 3, when they lost 20-12 at home to Memphis, a team they paid $1.3 million to face.

Their struggles began with a 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland, followed by a 28-13 defeat to Boston College at home in Week 2. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, a transfer from Clemson and Oregon State, has underperformed, completing just 56.6% of his passes for 666 yards, with only one touchdown and two interceptions.

The team’s rushing attack has also been dismal, with Florida State averaging just 2.2 yards per carry. Lawrance Toafili leads the team with only 67 rushing yards, while Alabama transfer Roydell Williams has managed 54 yards on 20 carries. In the passing game, only two players—Malik Benson (12 receptions, 171 yards) and Ja’Khi Douglas (nine receptions, 138 yards)—have over four receptions on the season.

As they prepare to face undefeated California this Saturday, bettors have taken notice of the Seminoles' struggles. However, per FanDuel, Florida State opened as 3.5-point favorites despite their poor form. Cal enters this matchup 3-0, with wins over UC Davis, at Auburn, and versus San Diego State.

For Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell, this disappointing start adds more pressure. Bettors will likely look to fade them as the season progresses, given their horrendous start. (I know I will.)

A win against Cal could give Florida State the momentum they desperately need, but their current form makes them a risky pick in betting circles. If the Seminoles fail again, expect the line to shift against them in future matchups.
