I'll be the first to say that Tuesday's NCAA slate is kind of terrible, with not a single ranked team in action. That leaves us with some games that probably aren't meant for primetime, but hey, there is still value that can be found in these awful matchups. Take Rider vs. Providence here. These two teams last met in 2017, when Providence won a close 88-84 game and failed to cover the spread, which was a massive -13.5. Of course, Providence is a different level of competition, but the spread will reflect that.
Providence made the Sweet 16 last season, which was surprising to some. However, they ran into a wall against the eventual national champion Kansas, but still covered as +7 underdogs in that game. That squad has gone by the wayside though. Eight players, including all five starters, have departed, leaving a lack of experience in their absence. The Friars essentially have a new team and the hope is that they can build off last season, but with all the new players, you never know what can happen.
PICK: With all these new players, it will take time for the Friars to get the chemistry rolling. Give me the points here as Providence figures things out.
I would bet that almost no one reading this has any clue who plays for Coppin State, and quite frankly, I don't blame you for not knowing.
While Georgetown are a Big East team, they may have lost their right to call themselves that after last season. They went an incredible 0-19 in conference play, which is almost impossible, but they were able to achieve this remarkable feat. They also just lost almost their entire roster after last season, so they are also a team that will have a bunch of new players. The Hoyas lost both of their top two scorers, and four of the top five. They lost all of their top three rebounders and five of the top seven. The Hoyas also lost all but one of the five men who averaged at least an assist per game.
PICK: Why not take the points with Coppin State against a terrible Georgetown team with an entirely new roster? Patrick Ewing might be gone if he can't put a winning team together, and things are at rock bottom.
Hey guys, a real basketball team is playing in this one that people actually know! Purdue is a much different team than they were last season however, and they are starting this season without some of the household names people have come to know. That's why we see them as an unranked squad after being a top-10 team last season. This is still a team that has 7'4 center Zach Edey, though. He only averaged 19 minutes per game alongside Trevion Williams but what he was able to do in those limited minutes was remarkable: 14.4 ppg, 7.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks while shooting 65% from the field. He'll need to carry the load this season without Williams and Ivey.
Milwaukee is a team that no one has heard of, and no one knows who is playing for them. Again, I don't blame you. Let's just say that they are terrible, and there is no need to even think twice about them. Guarding Edey will be like trying to stop a tank with a baseball bat.
PICK: Don't overthink it. Just take the Boilermakers to lay the hammer down.
