Providence basketball was dealt another blow with Cooley accepting Georgetown job

Providence basketball fans are still in mourning and picking up the pieces following the Friars’ early exit from the NCAA tournament and now they’ve been dealt an even more devastating blow.

Adding insult to injury, beloved head coach Ed Cooley will reportedly be taking the job as the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas. This is the first intra-conference coaching change in the history of the Big East.

As of March 13, Cooley was the favorite to be the next Georgetown head coach and that's exactly what happened. Coming after Providence’s loss to Kentucky, this is not going to sit well with Providence fans.

And I don’t see how Cooley will ever be able to show his face in Providence again after this move (or at least for while). First of all, Cooley was born in Providence. This is his hometown. His city. He came into this basketball program in 2011 and turned it around. And now that they’re out of the tournament one year after making it to the Sweet Sixteen, he’s dipping on Providence and leaving town to take the helm of a Big East rival.

The biggest clue here and punch in the gut for Providence fans was when news broke that Cooley’s house was listed for sale this morning. The East Greenwich, RI home was put on the market on Monday morning, which means Cooley has intended to move for at least a little while now. And why would you move out of this house if you weren’t taking a higher-paying job out of state, say in Washington, D.C.? I mean, look at this interior. This house has a cabana, a "resort-style backyard oasis" and an outdoor shower. If I had a staircase layout like this in my house (maybe not with this color scheme, but that can be changed), I would never sell it. But also if I was Ed Cooley, I wouldn’t abandon my city and the PC fans like this.

This house is awesome and the only possible reason there could be to sell this is if you were no longer going to be living anywhere near Rhode Island and taking a job as the head coach of the Georgetown basketball team. So that was pretty much confirmation of this news. And that is a bad reason because now Cooley is going to be seen by fans as a traitor. Providence Twitter is not happy about this move, to say the least.

No odds for next Providence head coach have been released yet, but I would expect some of the same names to be on the list of odds for the Georgetown position. But for now if you'll excuse me, I'm heading to Zillow to schedule a tour of that East Greenwich house. Need to check out those staircases.
