Best College Basketball Bets Today

Every day, I’ll handicap games early in the morning (east coast time) and provide a short explanation as to why I like them.

Bellarmine vs. Liberty (-16.5) Prediction

I successfully handicapped Bellarmine in yesterday’s first-round game in the Atlantic Sun tournament. Bellarmine will have a much stiffer test ahead of it today if it wants to play against on Wednesday.

Fortunately for us, I’m not taking a position here on a side, though I supposed I’d take the points with Bellarmine again if forced into action.

Instead, I like the under on this game. It’s not just that tournament games have a tendency to go under the posted total. I like unders in this sub-130 range.

There’s also a clear tendency toward the under when Liberty plays Bellarmine. This head-to-head matchup has gone under in four straight games, on totals of 124.5, 124.5, 135.5 and 122. No matchup ever produced more than 123 points.

Play: Bellarmine/Liberty Under 128.5. I think we’ll see another low-scoring affair between these two teams.

Texas Tech at Kansas (-9.5) Prediction

This number jumped out at me when I saw it posted on the BetMGM online sportsbook page for college basketball odds.

On paper, this is the first-place team in the Big 12 hosting the ninth-place team in the Big 12. Fine. But Texas Tech has played exceptionally well of late, winning four of its last five games outright in brutally rugged conference. It’s 6-4 ATS across its last 10.

On the other side, Kansas has struggled to cover numbers this high when the market likes it to win comfortably. The Jayhawks are 1-6 ATS when priced as a favorite between -7 and -11. The most recent example was over the weekend, when KU barely beat West Virginia at home as an identical 9.5-point favorite.

Texas Tech likely needs this win for a reasonable shot at the NCAA Tournament, which means the desperate Red Raiders are live to win this one outright. Given that, as well as the market stats on both teams, this just seems like way too many points.

Play: Texas Tech +9.5. I’d also consider the moneyline at +340.

College Basketball Best Bets

One of the things I look for in identifying daily college basketball betting spots is a high total that moves up another four to seven points thanks to sharp money.

I also like to look for contrarian favorites – those games that make you say, “Wait, why is that team favored?” – and ugly dogs who are getting too many points.

It’s also helpful to understand that underdogs of six or more are inherently valuable. Basketball doesn’t have key numbers quite like football does (3, 7, 10, etc) but 5.5 is about the next closest thing.

If you watch a lot of college basketball, it’s easy to imagine how a team up by just one point with 20 seconds left could end up covering a short number like -5 thanks to all the free throws at the end.

Once you have a favorite of -6 or more, though, those gaps start getting harder and harder to cover with just end-game nonsense.

That’s something to keep in mind when identifying valuable favorites or underdogs.
