Dan Karpuc’s 1st Pick: Spurs +1.5 vs. Hornets

I usually don’t put too much stock into preseason performances, but this Hornets team looked absolutely abysmal en route to an 0-5 record. Now, they’ll have to play without their star point guard LaMelo Ball in their season opener, since he’s dealing with an ankle sprain. That means Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward, P.J. Washington and Kelly Oubre will have to be volume scorers for Charlotte, who will likely turn Dennis Smith Jr. to run the point. AKA: things could get ugly for the Hornets, even against the young Spurs. This is certainly going to be a rebuilding year for San Antonio, but I’m excited to see what a full offseason in Gregg Popovich’s system did for Tre Jones, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Josh Primo. Rookie Jeremy Sochan should produce right away while Jakob Poeltl is a skilled big man on the interior. I expect him to make a difference in this matchup and for the home team to get the outright win.

Brad Pinkerton: Pelicans +3 at Nets

Watch out for the Pelicans this season. If Zion Williams is truly healthy, New Orleans is going to be a problem for any team. Even without Zion last season (and without C.J. McCollum for much of it), the Pelicans were right around .500 ATS overall and on the road. Meanwhile, the Nets still have myriad issues to figure out after last season when they were one of the worst teams ATS overall (33-52) and the worst at home (9-34) and as home favorites (5-29-1). I don't believe all of Brooklyn's issues have been solved yet, and I do believe the Pelicans are going to take a giant step forward this season with Williamson and McCollum, so give me New Orleans to cover, if not win, in Brooklyn.
