Los Angeles Angels vs. Adrian Martinez (6.08 ERA), Oakland Athletics
The Angels have missed the playoffs once again, and that is just ridiculous with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani on the team. Ownership refuses to support them by putting together a real pitching Staff and supporting players, and it is really sad to see. While they may not be that good, they are certainly better than the Oakland Athletics, who may be the worst team in the league. They are starting Adrian Martinez here, and he hasn't been impressive.
In his last start, Martinez took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings against these same Angels. He struck out four. Martinez has now allowed three or more runs in four consecutive starts, going 0-3 over that stretch with a 9.33 ERA and 1.91 WHIP. That is about as bad as it gets, almost like he shouldn't be pitching in the professional leagues. Actually, that is the case.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Jose Berrios (5.37 ERA), Toronto Blue Jays
I think at this point the Orioles realize that making the playoffs is pretty much an impossibility for them, but the season they have had so far has been a very special one. No one expected them to do much of anything at all in 2022, but they have been one of the biggest surprises in the league. They were so close to making the playoffs, but they haven't quit, and they have a very winnable matchup here on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays and Jose Berrios.
In his last start, Berrios took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Blue Jays were downed 5-2 by the Yankees. He struck out seven. He had a run of three straight quality starts to begin September but has been pretty bad since, giving up 11 runs in his last two outings. His 5.37 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 166 innings on the year remain very disappointing considering he hadn't posted an ERA above 4.00 for a season since his 58.1-inning rookie season in 2016.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Jose Urena (5.24 ERA), Colorado Rockies
The Dodgers are going to end up with the best record in baseball yet again, and that is to be expected for a team that has spent as much money as Los Angeles has. They can do pretty much whatever they want with the budget they have, and what they want is to be the best team in the league every single year. Welp, mission accomplished again. Now they get to face the Rockies in a totally meaningless game that will have zero implications on the playoffs. And they should still dominate against Jose Urena.
In his last start, Urena was tagged with the loss against San Francisco, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out six batters over five innings. Urena made five starts in September, posting a 3.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 27.1 innings while registering an 0-3 record. He hasn't been that bad, but he simply cannot get in the win column with the terrible team surrounding him. Either way, he's a guy to bet against.
