Bundesliga Recap - Matchday 28

Bayern Munich couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin this weekend and with RB Leipzig securing the three points on the road against Werder Bremen, the title race in the Bundesliga got a bit tighter with six games left in the schedule. Borussia Dortmund had to come from behind to rescue a win on the road to keep their Champions League chances alive, and Schalke showed they’re not dead yet and want to fight as much as they can to avoid what appears to be a stint in the country’s second-tier league next season.

After losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week, Bayern Munich needed to bounce back but only settled for a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin on Saturday. Marcus Ingvartsen was the absolute hero for the Berlin-based outfit, as his goal in the 86th minute canceled Jamal Musiala’s strike. RB Leipzig took advantage of that, however, and their 4-1 win at Werder Bremen made it a five-point race with six games left in the schedule. Alexander Sorloth’s brace and Dani Olmo’s opening strike set the tone for a Leipzig side that also saw Marcel Sabitzer score in the second half, while Milot Rashica netted Bremen’s lone goal from the spot.

Dortmund delivered what was perhaps the best performance of the entire weekend, as they came back from a 1-0 deficit and a 2-2 draw to earn three vital points on the race for a Champions League berth by defeating Stuttgart 3-2 on the road. Jude Bellingham, Emre Can, and Ansgar Knauff netted for Dortmund, while Sasa Kalajdzic and Daniel Didavi did it for the hosts. Dortmund are now seven points behind a Champions League berth with six games left to be played.

Schalke 04 are 13 points away from safety but secured a massive 1-0 home victory over Augsburg on Sunday. They still have the worst attack (18 goals scored) and the worst defensive line (71 goals conceded) while also winning just two of their 28 games, so the Gelsenkirchen outfit have their work cut out to avoid getting relegated. They keep fighting, however, and that’s all you can ask them to do at this point in the season.
