Burdge: I'm Hitting This Red Sox Futures Bet Before Opening Day

Believe it or not, there is a Red Sox futures bet that I like

I know Red Sox fans are not exactly excited about the 2024 MLB season. Many are bracing themselves for another year of nightly disappointment after an offseason with no huge splashes or major additions to the team or big spending or really much of anything notable.

So, while looking for some sliver of optimism for this season (which I am not entirely dreading, by the way), I took a look at all of the MLB futures odds at BetMGM to see if any of the odds pertaining to the Red Sox stuck out to me. Because I've seen people betting on the Red Sox to have the worst record in the league (that's +9000 at BetMGM, for the record), but I don't see that happening. You cannot tell me the Oakland A's are going to have more wins than the Red Sox this season.

Anyway, that brings me to the bet that caught my eye: the Red Sox to win over 79.5 games at +100. I do not hate this bet at all, as I think this team will win 80 games this year.

So, while I'm not taking the Red Sox to win the World Series at +5000 (yet) or to make the playoffs at +260, I am all-in on the over on this win total at +100.

The Red Sox had a rough season last year and they still won 78 games. I just don't think this team is going to be "rock-bottom," as some believe. I'm excited about guys like Triston Casas, of course, but also about Vaughn Grissom (the return from Atlanta for Chris Sale), who is an underrated offseason addition. Not to mention Rafael Devers and his 33 home runs last season. And let's say the Red Sox sign Jordan Montgomery; that's some solid improvement in a pitching rotation that could use a boost.

All the Red Sox have to do to go over this total is, bare minimum, play like they did last year and have two more good days than they had in 2023 to bump that up to 80 wins. If you want to take a futures bet on the Red Sox, but can't decide which one you have the most confidence in, this is the one I see as the most likely to happen. Plus, the wins will mean a little extra all season.

It's important to never give up hope and keep the faith and remember that no matter what happens to the Red Sox this season, the world will watch it all over again on Netflix in 2025.
