NBA Betting Picks: May 2

NBA Total Pick (O/U): Pacers Over 110.5 vs. Bucks

When the Pacers have won, they’ve covered this line with ease scoring 125, 121, and 126. At -5.5, the spread suggests that Indiana should win this game fairly comfortably.  

The Bucks surprised Indiana on Tuesday with the personnel changes they made on the defensive end with Khris Middleton defending Myles Turner and Brook Lopez defending Aaron Nesmith. After 29-point performances in Games 3 and 4, Turner was held to just 13 points in Game 5. Nesmith’s impact was also limited with just seven points on 33.3% shooting. Pascal Siakam was also a non-factor with only 12 points and four rebounds. 

On the other side, the Bucks played their most efficient offensive game of this series, posting an offensive rating of 130.7. They got huge contributions from Bobby Portis who posted a playoff-high 29 points to go along with 29 from Middleton. 

The playoffs are all about adjustments and while Milwaukee made the right moves in Game 5, I think the Pacers will find a way to combat its offensive struggle and put up a big number to close out this series.

NBA Total Pick (O/U): Knicks at 76ers Under 202

The Knicks blew their chance of closing out the series on Tuesday, giving up a seven-point lead with 25 seconds left before going on to lose in overtime. Tyrese Maxey deserves all the credit for the Sixers, hitting two massive threes to send this game to OT. This series now heads back to Philly for Game 6 with the momentum in the Sixers' favor. 

I lean toward the Knicks covering +3.5 because I think we’ll see another extremely close game, but I’m also worried New York might be a little deflated after such a tough loss. Because I don’t feel like I have much of an edge on the spread, I’m going to play the total under 202 instead. 

Both coaches have shored up their rotations - along with injuries impacting lineups - with Tom Thibodeau going seven players deep and Nick Nurse playing eight. With Game 5 going to overtime, Tyrese Maxey played 52 minutes, Tobias Harris played 49 and Joel Embiid played 48. On New York’s side, Josh Hart, Jalen Brunson and OG Annuoby all played 50+ minutes. 

Those are heavy minutes for anyone to be playing at this point in the season, but they’re especially concerning in a series as physical as this one. With only one day of rest between Games 5 and 6, fatigue will be a major factor tonight. Because of that, I expect the pace to slow down and for players to have tired legs, leading to lower shooting percentages for both squads and thus a lower-scoring game. 

There is also an obvious concern surrounding the health of Embiid who has been dealing with a knee injury. I’m not sure how much longer his body is going to hold up if he continues playing 40+ minutes, which he’s done in three straight games. If he has to sit at all, the Knicks will capitalize without him on the floor. So, while my favorite play is the under, if you’re interested in playing the side, this is another reason I lean toward New York covering.
