Serie A recap - Matchday 30

Inter Milan recorded another win and took another step towards ending Juventus’ run of Serie A titles, while the Old Lady and Atalanta took solid steps towards securing a Top 4 spot once it’s all said and done. The standings are quite tight in Italy’s top-flight, but there are a few tendencies that are looking noticeable -- both at the top and the bottom of the table.

Inter Milan extended their Serie A winning streak to 11 games following another dominant, yet unspectacular effort -- a first-half strike from Romelu Lukuku was everything the Milan-based outfit needed to walk away with another victory. Inter have gone six straight games without winning by more than one goal, but they’re simply getting the job done -- that’s important considering the top sides also won this weekend. The first seven-placed teams all won this weekend, which means AC Milan remains alive in the title race following their 3-1 away victory at Parma. Juventus also won by a 3-1 score -- at home against Genoa -- and remains alive in the berth for a Champions League berth over Atalanta, Napoli, Lazio, and AS Roma.

Things at the bottom of the table are getting clearer as well, with Crotone sitting dead last and being 12 points away from safety with eight games left. Needless to say, it’s quite hard to imagine Crotone mounting any sort of a comeback to avoid getting relegated. Parma and Cagliari are also several points adrift from safety and have a tough road ahead if they want to avoid playing in the Serie B next season.

Perhaps the most exciting game was played this Sunday when Fiorentina came back from a two-goal deficit and evened things up before ultimately losing to Atalanta by a 3-2 score. A brace from Duvan Zapata and a game-winning penalty from Josip Ilicic resulted in three points for La Dea, while Dusan Vlahovic netted a brace for Fiorentina in the second half.
