Serie A Props & Futures

Serie A, Italy’s top football tier, returns to action on June 20th following a hiatus of three-plus months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bets are already available for every single game on the schedule; however, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to also invest in alternative scenarios such as future props.

Here are three bets -- all of them with a clear resolution at the end of the season -- that could end up being strong plays based on what has happened so far.

Top-4 Finish

Odds (bet365): Inter Milan (-5000), Atalanta (-600), Roma (+350), Napoli (+2000), AC Milan (+5000)

Pick: Roma

Analysis: Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan are all title contenders and it would be shocking if they fail to finish the season as the top three teams in the standings. The fourth spot gives an automatic berth to the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League and remains up for grabs. Atalanta (4th, 48 points) are a good bet to remain in that place, but what about AS Roma? The Capitol-based side ranks fifth with 45 points -- albeit having played one fewer game than Atalanta -- and have a good shot at jumping past their rivals. Atalanta have the better attack and the stronger recent form, but it would be wrong to discard Roma so quickly.

Serie A Winner

Odds (bet365): Juventus (-250), Lazio (+250), Inter Milan (+900), Atalanta (+3300)

Pick: Lazio

Analysis: Juventus remain at the top of the standings with 63 points and a W20, D3, L3 record, but Lazio reduced the gap to just one point (62 pts, W19, D5, L2) with 12 games left on the schedule for both sides. While it’s never a good idea to bet against Juventus -- they have won each of the last eight league titles -- Lazio have a realistic shot this season.

No team in the league, other than Juventus, has won more matches than Simone Ingazhi’s men (19 against Juve’s 20), but the Rome-based do have other advantages to support their title claim. They have lost a league-leading two games, while owning both the second-best attack (60 goals scored, 2.30 per game) and the stingiest defense (23 goals conceded, 0.88 per match). If they sustain the pace they carried before the hiatus (four straight wins and 23 straight games without a loss), then they’re undoubtedly a team to watch down the stretch.

Top Scorer in 2019-2020 Serie A Season

Odds (BetMGM):  Ciro Immobile (-667), Cristiano Ronaldo (+400), Romelu Lukaku (+2000), Josip Ilicic (+8000), Edin Dzeko (+25000)

Pick: Cristiano Ronaldo

Analysis: Ciro Immobile has been the league’s best striker during the entire 2019-20 campaign. His 27 goals (to go along with seven assists) not only pace the league by a six-goal margin, but they have also been one of main reasons why Lazio have gone 23-straight games without a loss. While he could easily end up as the season’s top scorer, it’s never too late to discard Cristiano Ronaldo, 35, off the race for the Golden Boot.

The Portuguese legend has 21 goals and, on paper, sits well behind Immobile. He was on an absolute tear before the season stopped in mid-March. CR7 registered eight goals in his previous seven league matches, and The Old Lady will face weaker sides such as Bologna, Lecce, Genoa and Torino to restart the campaign. If he does well in those matches, then Immobile’s scoring title might be in danger.

It’s not easy by any means, but if any player has defied the odds time and time again throughout the course of his career, that’s Ronaldo.
