Performance Of Late

It’s easy to talk about how good Manchester United has been over the last few months. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are currently riding an impressive 16-game undefeated streak across all competitions, winning 12 times during the span. The Red Devils have not lost a single match since they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Burnley back in late-January.

Players such as Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford get most of the praise from both fans and media, and for good reason -- this run wouldn’t be possible without Martial’s goals, Fernandes’ ability to mark the tempo, or without Rashford’s contributions when he’s not scoring. However, one player that doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as he deserves is one of Manchester United’s youngest forwards. He goes by the name of Mason Greenwood.

The 18-year-old forward -- 19 in October -- has slowly gained importance in Solskjaer’s tactical scheme over the last few months. He has been trusted with a bigger role over the last few weeks, though, and he has responded. The right winger's role has been United’s weak link in the attacking line during most of the season, but Greenwood seems to have solved that for both short and long-term scenarios.

Already the team’s youngest player to debut in the UEFA Champions League when he featured last season against PSG, Greenwood’s rise has been even more noticeable since the English Premier League restarted last month. He made a huge impact against Tottenham off the bench on June 20th and was rewarded with the start during the team’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United a few days later. He hasn’t left the starting XI at the EPL level since then.

The results are there for everyone to see. Greenwood scored once and set up another goal against Brighton. He is coming off a two-goal performance against Bournemouth on July 4th. That’s impressive for any player, let alone an 18-year-old who, until a few months ago, was yet to establish himself as a first-team member. His explosiveness has taken the Premier League by storm.

Greenwood's Effect On Team's Future

Greenwood’s rise will probably play a role in the club’s approach ahead of the 2020-2021 transfer window as well. Alexis Sanchez must return from his loan spell at Inter Milan, and Manchester United had also been linked with names such as Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish in the past. However, the presence of Greenwood might lead to Sanchez’s departure and a more cautious approach when it comes to transfers.

It makes sense to take a step back when it comes to adding new players. No one will say Greenwood is a better player than Sancho or Grealish, but the upside of both Greenwood and Daniel James is sky-high. Why would The Red Devils sign another right winger or striker when they may already have the long-term solutions for both positions in the current squad?

At this stage of his career, Greenwood needs to play as much as he can. The 18-year-old forward has earned a bigger role with his performances this season and it wouldn’t be a stretch to see him as a full-time starter when the next campaign kicks in. The youngster has earned his stripes and it's now time for him to take the next step in his career.

Calling him a star might be exaggerated, but the potential is there. He can be the club’s most impactful Academy prospect since Marcus Rashford came through the youth ranks several years ago.
