Premier League Recap - Matchday 31

Matchday 31 in the English Premier League delivered a few shocking results while also providing a clearer picture of which teams might end up sneaking in the race for the European spots, as well as almost sealing the relegation of Sheffield United.

The biggest result happened Saturday when Leeds United pulled a gigantic upset against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium. The hosts were massive favorites to come away with the victory and looked in control during most of the game, but Leeds had other plans and two late goals from Stuart Dallas at each side of halftime gave The Whites a gigantic win on the road. The win has even more value if we consider Leeds United played with 10 men during the entire second half after Liam Cooper was sent off nearing the end of the first half. Ferran Torres scored Manchester City’s lone goal in the 76th minute.

It was a positive week for most of the Top 6 teams as well, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United all earning the three points this weekend. The Reds topped Aston Villa at home by a 2-1 score thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold, while The Blues, The Gunners, and The Red Devils all came away with the three points on the road -- in games where the winning side scored at least three goals each time. Out of that trio, Manchester United’s win was by far the most impressive one since they came back from a one-goal deficit to get past Tottenham (3-1) thanks to goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood. Arsenal won 3-0 at Sheffield United and Chelsea netted four past Crystal Palace (1-4) at Selhurst Park.

Last but not least, something must be said about Sheffield. The Blades extended their losing streak to four games and have recorded just four wins in 31 matches. With 14 points and sitting 18 points away from safety with 21 left to be played, the Bramall Lane outfit is getting ready to play in the Championship during the 2021-22 campaign
