A Breakout Campaign

Nathan MacKinnon is the best player on one of the NHL’s elite teams – and it’s not even close. As such, he’s eagerly awaiting the resumption of a breakout season. When the NHL halted play in March, MacKinnon, the first overall pick in the 2013 draft, was leading the Colorado Avalanche with 93 points. This points total is an eye-popping 43 ahead of the team's second-leading scorer, Cale Makar (rookie defenseman).

Many experts have included the 24-year-old center in the conversation for this year’s Hart Trophy candidates. MacKinnon has rebounded from a solid, but not stellar start to his NHL career; he has spoken about recently overcoming self-doubt and self-criticism. A sports psychologist has helped him greatly, and proof is found in his recent statistics. He has tallied 289 points in 225 games the past three seasons and his 1.28 points per game average ranks third in the NHL during that timeframe behind only Connor McDavid (1.43) and Nikita Kucherov (1.36).

A Superstar Leading Stars

Some experts see MacKinnon becoming a household name by taking his game to an elite level in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Colorado will enter the postseason as one of the top-four teams in the Western Conference, along with the St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars. A round-robin tournament will be played against those teams to determine playoff seeding.

MacKinnon’s quick feet and hands, including his accurate shot should serve him well again in the postseason. In 25 playoff games, he’s averaging more than a point per game (11 goals and 18 assists). MacKinnon benefits from playing on a team loaded with talent. For instance, his linemates Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen would be the number-one star on most every other NHL team, but with Colorado, they’re content to let MacKinnon fill that role. On the flip side, MacKinnon recognizes that he doesn’t have to carry the Avalanche on his back.
