I thought earlier in the year when the Buffalo Sabres started out on fire that it wouldn't last, and they would eventually start to come back down to Earth. Well, not only has that happened, but they have essentially crash landed and burrowed themselves down under the Earth's crust. The Sabres have lost eight straight games, which is just unacceptable for any team in the NHL. I didn't think Buffalo was a great team like some thought when they were winning out of the gate, but I also don't think they are this bad. The Sabres are taking 31.9 shots per game and scoring 3.44 goals per game, so the offense really hasn't been bad at all. It's the defense and goaltending that has failed them recently, as they are allowing 31.4 shots per game and 3.67 goals per contest.

Montreal is the complete opposite of Buffalo, as they have won three of their last five games. Now, that doesn't mean they are a good team, but they have been respectable. The offense is about as average as it can get, taking 30.8 shots per game and scoring 3.06 goals per contest. The defense has been what has held them back, allowing 33.2 shots per game and they have looked worse, in my opinion. Goaltending has also been a problem for them, but they just have to play better on that side of the ice. They allow far too many dangerous chances.

MY PICK: Buffalo has to win at some point after losing eight straight. Montreal is a team that they certainly can beat. It will be tough on the road, but give me the Sabres here to finally win a hockey game.

New York and Los Angeles renew their rivalry on Tuesday night in the City of Angels. For the Rangers, it has to be a frustrating start to the year. They are barely hovering above .500 despite actually performing well in most games. New York takes 34.6 shots per game, so they are at no shortage of offense, except for the fact they can't get the puck to the back of the net. The Rangers score just 2.95 goals per game despite that offensive production. The team has been very efficient defensively, allowing 28.2 shots per game and just 2.68 goals per game. This is a team that should have a better record than they have, and I think they will turn it around and end the year as a top-10 team, but sometimes that takes a while to get to.

The Kings are much in the same boat as the Rangers, but they aren't as disappointed about their start. Expectations were far lower for LA, even after being a playoff team in 2021. The worst part of the team has been what we expected to be a stronger part, and that is the goaltending. They have allowed 3.38 goals per game, but to their credit, that number has gotten better as they have gone on. The offense is better than expected, which is a pleasant surprise for a team that has never really been known for their offense. LA is back to playing good defense after struggling to start the year.

MY PICK: We have been winning more than not by taking the Kings as underdogs because I feel like the sport books have this team rated poorly and I don't agree with it based off of their play. New York is better than their record, but I find it hard not to take the plus-money with the Kings at home.
