We'll start out in Canada, where the Toronto Maple Leafs will be at home facing off against a very good Eastern Conference foe in the New York Rangers. These are two of the best teams in that conference, and we should be in store for a great game tonight between the two. New York has been great, scoring 3.17 goals per game and allowing just 2.62, which is a great goal differential. Some people doubted them early on when they were struggling, but if you pay attention to their numbers, you knew they would turn it around. They are outshooting opponents 32.7 to 29.3.
Toronto is equally as good, if not better than New York is. They are scoring a whopping 3.40 goals per game and are allowing just a small 2.60 per game. The Maple Leafs outshoot their opponents 31.8 to 28.7, so both of these teams have been dominating in puck possession for most of the year. Both teams have also won three of their last five games, so neither is hot or cold coming into this.
MY PICK: Rangers +140. Two very good teams playing each other, I'll take the plus-money here. New York is clearly good enough to win this game, and I don't see the difference between these two teams being this drastic, and I'm certainly not laying -160 against the Rangers.
If you're not playing BetMGM's NHL OGP Insurance promo yet, you're leaving money on the table. Opt in to the promo and place a four-leg (minimum) NHL one-game parlay; if your OGP loses by one leg, you'll get your stake back in a free bet up to $25 -- and you can take advantage of this promo once every day there's an NHL game!
Here is my play for today, using the strategy of taking both teams to go under their maximum goal total in the 1st period (gimmie legs), taking the favorite at their maximum spread, and adding the most likely goal scorer; you can apply this strategy to any game, any night:
Nylander Anytime Goal
Rangers Under 2.5 1P
Maple Leafs Under 3.5 1P
Maple Leafs +2.5
(OGP odds: +160)

My second best bet of the night also comes from Canada, where the Columbus Blue Jackets will be visiting the Edmonton Oilers. This is the most lopsided battle of the night by far. The Blue Jackets are a total disaster, one of the worst teams in hockey, and painful to pick to win any game they play. This is a team that is scoring just 2.47 goals per game and allowing an insane 3.87 against them. In terms of shots on goal, it's not even close, where they are taking just 28.9 per game compared to allowing 35.1 against.
Edmonton certainly isn't my favorite team in the world, and I do think they have a real weakness in net when they have to face good teams, but this isn't that occasion. They are taking 32.8 shots per game and scoring 3.71 goals per game, one of the highest-scoring teams in the league. They do allow 32.1 shots per game and 3.23 goals per contest, but their offense has been able to hide their weakness on the defensive end.
MY PICK: Oilers -1.5. Normally I would take the value here with the underdog, but I just don't see how Edmonton doesn't blow Columbus away. I am scared to think of what Connor McDavid might do against a defense that allows 35 shots and 3.87 goals per game. They could easily score 5+ tonight against this terrible Jackets team.
