Back To Business

Only four teams are favored to win the Stanley Cup ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers (+1000 per DraftKings Sportsbook) in 2020. That says a lot about how much respect goalie Carter Hart has earned in his first full NHL season. The Flyers, one of the top-four seeds in the Eastern Conference, are tied with the Boston Bruins for the best record in the NHL since January 8th at 19-6-1.

Hart was white hot when the league paused its season in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. He posted a 7-1-0 record over his last eight starts, including a .941 save percentage. Overall, he is 24-13-3 with a .914 save percentage and a 2.42 goals-against average, which ranks eighth in the league, and his 25 quality starts are ninth-best. His 4.46 goals saved above average is impressive for a 21-year-old.

Pressure Time

It will be interesting to see how Hart performs in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut, especially considering all of the Flyers games will be played away from Philadelphia. That’s where Hart has been dominant; he has notched a 20-3-2 record, a 1.63 goals-against average, and a .943 save percentage at Wells Fargo Center this season. His road stats pale in comparison: 4-10-1, 3.81 goals-against average and .857 save percentage.

Philadelphia fans are eager to see if Hart can handle the pressure of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He got a taste of competing on a grand stage as a member of Team Canada at the 2017 and 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. During the 2018 tournament, Hart notched a .929 save percentage, a 1.81 goals-against average, and one shutout across six games. He helped lead Canada to a gold medal.

The Flyers, who’ve been looking for a franchise goalie for years, drafted Hart 48th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He was the first goaltender selected that year. We’re now seeing why.
