  • In 2019, the Indianapolis Colts defense ranked in the middle of the pack in most categories. An intimidating front seven should lead the Colts to a top-10 defensive performance in 2020.

  • The offseason trade for DeForest Buckner will give the Indy defensive line a huge lift. Buckner contributed 7.5 sacks to the San Francisco 49ers elite defense last season.

  • Veteran pass rusher Justin Houston proved last season that he still has plenty left in the tank. The Colts will still be a team that can get after the quarterback.

  • Darius Leonard is the undisputed leader of the Indianapolis defense, giving the Colts one of the best linebackers in the NFL who is only now entering his prime.

  • The Colts are +110 to win the AFC South, per DraftKings. They're +2500 to win it all.

Pass Rush Reinforcements

In March, the Colts made one of the biggest offseason acquisitions in the NFL by trading for DeForest Buckner. Fresh off a Second-Team All-Pro honor in 2019, Buckner is undoubtedly one of the top defensive tackles in the league right now. He’s just two years removed from a 12-sack season and managed to tally 7.5 sacks as part of a stacked San Francisco 49ers defensive front in 2019. At age-26, Buckner is in his prime and will transform the Indianapolis defensive line.

Ideal Veteran Presence

The addition of Buckner should be particularly helpful for defensive end Justin Houston. The Chiefs let him go after the 2018 season, thinking his best days were behind him. Houston responded with 11 sacks last year, his most since the 2014 season when he racked up 22. Clearly, Houston has a lot left in the tank and should be motivated to be at his best with free agency on the horizon after the 2020 season.

Ideally, the Colts would get a little more from young defensive ends Ben Banogu and Kemoko Turay, who are both due to take a step forward in 2020. With Buckner receiving plenty of attention and Houston continuing to be a force on the edge, the Indy pass rush is in great shape.

Leader Of The Pack

Of course, the biggest reason why the Colts feel great about their front seven heading into 2020 is middle linebacker Darius Leonard. This guy took the league by storm two years ago and still might have his best football ahead of him. Leonard has been an All-Pro in each of his first two seasons and is a force in the middle of the field. Plus, he has produced 12 sacks and seven interceptions in 28 career games, which is insane for a linebacker in a 4-3 scheme. He’ll be 25 when the season starts and could be even better in 2020 with two years of experience under his belt, which is a scary thought for opponents. Offenses beware! The Colts are ready to wreak havoc.
