Preseason Week 1 NFL Best Bets

Lucy Burdge: Panthers +3 vs. Commanders
Based on how the Commanders have looked during training camp, I am absolutely taking the Panthers to win this first preseason game. Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold will each play one series and with both of them competing for the starting quarterback job, I would think they’ll both want to be on their game. Washington also had no joint practices against other teams, so they’ve only practiced against each other. So I see a lot of advantages for the Panthers to cover the spread and get the win against the Commanders.

Brad Pinkerton: Rams-Chargers Under 31.5
This matchup almost gets me excited to watch a preseason game (almost), but we'll have to wait until Jan. 1 for the regular-season meeting between these two in-town rivals. Chances are, Future Me will bet the over in that Week 17 game, but I'm not falling for this relatively low total here. These two only mustered 19 points in their preseason Week 1 meeting last year before both offenses put up major points during the regular season, and I think we'll see a similar, low-scoring performance Saturday. Don't be fooled into thinking either team will be going all-out tonight.
