Why Finding Derrick Henry’s Backup Actually Matters in Tennessee

Henry's workload was excessive last season

  • The Tennessee Titans figure to lean on Derrick Henry a ton in 2020, but they still need to figure out who will back him up before the season starts.

  • Henry had over 300 carries last season, and that was before he carried Tennessee for three playoff games. He needs someone to take some of the load off.

  • Henry’s future in Tennessee beyond 2020 is uncertain, meaning it’s best if the Titans have someone in place to provide their backfield with stability, especially as a pass-catcher.

  • DraftKings set Henry's season rushing yard over/under at 1325.5, the highest of any player.

Heavy Load On Henry

There are few backs in the NFL that can carry a team the way Henry did last season. He had over 300 carries during the regular-season in 2019 and 83 more during the team’s three playoff games. No matter how big and powerful he is, Henry receiving that many touches for a second-straight season isn’t sustainable. After all, Tennessee will want to keep Henry fresh for the second half of the season when they need him to get 25 or 30 carries in a game. Of course, this means finding a reliable backup who warrants regular carries and can play for extended periods when Henry needs a break. Every NFL team needs multiple backs and having Henry doesn’t make the Titans an exception.

Planning for the Future

The Titans are hoping to sign Henry to a long-term extension, but right now, nothing is certain beyond his $10.2 million franchise tag. Given the extension the Titans gave Ryan Tannehill, being able to afford Henry is far from a guarantee. If they can’t keep him around, the'll need a backup in place who can be part of the future. Otherwise, they’ll be starting from scratch in the backfield when the 2021 offseason rolls around. The hope is that third-rounder Darrynton Evans can be a suitable backup, but if he’s not ready, Tennessee will need to look elsewhere in case Henry leaves after the 2020 season.

Versatility In The Backfield

As amazing as Henry was in the playoffs last year, he can’t do everything. The Titans are lacking a versatile back who can play on third downs and be a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. Among Tennessee running backs, Henry was the leading receiver last season with just 18 catches. The Titans needs to do better in that department, which is why their backup situation is so crucial. Whoever steps up and takes that role will need to be able to make plays and do the things that Henry can’t. Having a running back as a receiving threat in 2020 will add another dimension to this offense.
