Why Brandon Brooks' Injury Won't Devastate The Eagles Offense

The remainder of the offensive line will have to pick up the slack

  • The Philadelphia Eagles have lost three-time Pro Bowler Brandon Brooks to an Achilles injury that will keep him out for the 2020 season.

  • Depth shouldn’t be an issue for the Eagles along the offensive line, as they have multiple in-house candidates to replace Brooks.

  • The Eagles are +140 to win the NFC East and -182 to make the playoffs, per DraftKings. Therefore, they're expected to be a quality team after quietly assembling one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL this offseason. Continue reading to see why Philly is well-suited to deal with the loss of their star o-lineman.

Replacement Options For Brooks

With Brooks going to the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons, there’s no question that he’ll be tough to replace. The Eagles have some in-house options they can explore before having to look elsewhere for his replacement. Matt Pryor has served as a backup for the past two seasons and should get an opportunity to win the job during training camp. Philadelphia also used a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft on former Auburn offensive guard Jack Driscoll. After handling right tackle in the SEC for the last two seasons, Driscoll could have a chance to hold his own at right guard in the NFL.

Picking Up the Slack

To be fair, right guard is still a question mark for the Eagles until they feel that one of their candidates can handle the job, but the Eagles can rest easy knowing that the positions on the offensive line next to right guard are solid. Center Jason Kelce has been a first-team All-Pro in three straight seasons and is arguably the best center in the NFL right now. At right tackle, the Eagles have the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL in Lane Johnson. Between Kelce and Johnson, the Eagles shouldn’t have too many concerns about the right side of their offensive line, even with Brooks going down.

Carson Wentz's Adaptability

Last but not least, the Philadelphia offense will remain in safe hands as long as Carson Wentz remains healthy. Down the stretch in 2019, Wentz was able to overcome several injuries to the team’s wide receiver corps. Surely, he’ll be able to adapt to the loss of one of his starting offensive linemen. Wentz is mobile enough to flee the pocket when he needs to and smart enough to get rid of the ball in the face of pressure and live to play another down. Obviously, Brooks is a big loss for the Eagles, but it’s nothing their offense can’t overcome as long as Wentz is running the show.
