State Of The Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to experience endless disappointing results in what has been a frustrating season in the City of Brotherly Love. Last week, the Eagles trailed 24-6 after three quarters, only to make a strong comeback against the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter. However, a two-point conversion in the final two minutes failed and the Eagles lost 30-28. The loss dropped Philadelphia to 1-4-1 on the season, but they remain 0.5 games behind the first-place Dallas Cowboys. This gives the Eagles hope of turning things around and seizing control of the NFC East, especially with a home game against the Cowboys in Week 8. Philadelphia (+140) ranks just behind New York for best odds to win the NFC East, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Slowly but surely, Carson Wentz is starting to get the Philadelphia offense on track. The Eagles have scored at least 23 points in four-straight games despite key receivers missing time due to injury. Unfortunately, the health situation in Philadelphia is only getting worse with Miles Sanders and Zach Ertz expected to miss Thursday’s game. Lane Johnson is also missing from an offensive line that has allowed Wentz to be sacked 11 times in the last two weeks alone. Wentz, to his credit, has tried to hang in there. Last week’s loss to the Ravens was the first game of the season that the quarterback didn’t throw an interception, but he still has more picks than touchdown passes this year.

Defensively, the Eagles aren’t doing enough to support an offense that’s fighting the injury bug. They’ve allowed at least 30 points in half of their games this season. To be fair, the Eagles had a decent performance in the second half against the Ravens' offense last week outside of a long touchdown run by Lamar Jackson. However, even mediocre quarterbacks have had success throwing the ball against the Philadelphia defense this season, even with the Eagles putting together a solid pass rush.

New York's First Taste Of Success

It only took six games, but Joe Judge finally has his first win as an NFL head coach. More importantly, the Giants have their first win of the season, and at 1-5, New York is just one game behind Dallas in the NFC East. The Giants (+850) are currently the third-favorite to win the NFC East, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

To be fair, the Giants have suffered a lot of close and competitive losses this season, so their 1-5 record is a little misleading. At the same time, they needed to stop a two-point conversion late in order to beat a 1-5 Washington Football Team. Nevertheless, with three of their next four games inside the division, the Giants have a realistic chance to push their way to the top of the NFC East if they can build off last week’s win.

After showing a little promise in a close loss to the Cowboys, Daniel Jones failed to follow up with a sound performance against the Football Team. The second-year quarterback managed just 112 passing yards and was more productive as a runner. Devonta Freeman has given New York’s rushing attack a nice lift, gaining at least 60 yards on the ground in back-to-back games. However, the inconsistency at quarterback is holding the Giants back. They're second-to-last in the NFL in points per game, scoring 20 or fewer in all but one game.

It’s been up to the New York defense to keep the G-Men in games this season. In fairness, they’ve done a decent job of that, holding 3-of-6 opponents under 20 points. Forcing eight turnovers and amassing eight sacks in six games isn’t overly impressive; however, the Giants have done a decent job against the run and have been able to keep teams in check by not giving up big plays. As long as that continues, New York can at least stay competitive in games while waiting for the offense to wake up.

Eagles vs. Giants Game Line

Thursday’s game could come down to how much the New York defense is able to take advantage of an injury-riddled Philadelphia offense. The Eagles have given up plenty of sacks and have committed plenty of turnovers this season. The Giants haven’t shown that they’re capable of seizing on such opportunities. The hope that Philadelphia can avoid those kinds of mistakes is the biggest reason why the Eagles are 4.5-point favorites.

Philadelphia (-220) is favored by 4.5 points over New York (+185) with the over/under set at 43 total points.
