This trade clears the way for San Francisco to take a quarterback third on April 29.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was both injured and underwhelming in his 2020 campaign and there have been strong signals towards the 49ers looking for a new signal caller.
The most likely candidate to go third and replace Jimmy G is Ohio State QB Justin Fields.

With Trevor Lawrence the overwhelming favorite to go No. 1 and Zach Wilson the betting favorite to go No. 2 -- -200 at DraftKings Sportsbook -- Fields sits at -200 to go to San Francisco.
For reference, Fields is +500 to be selected by the New York Jets at pick No. 2.
Elsewhere in the betting market, the 49ers are 15-1 to win the Super Bowl while the Dolphins are 28-1 at DK. Expect San Francisco’s odds to shorten over the next few days upon the news that they will be taking a QB in at pick No. 3.
The Niners were banged up all over the roster in 2020, resulting in a 6-10 season after making the Super Bowl the prior year.
The Dolphins were not done after this trade though, turning some of their recently acquired draft capital into an improved pick in the 2021 Draft. Miami moved the No. 12 selection and a future first rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 6 pick this year.
