Surging Rams

It’s a short week for the Los Angeles Rams, but they’ll be feeling good after Monday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Back-to-back wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay have surely made a statement to the rest of the NFC that Los Angeles is a contender. Equally important, those wins have put the Rams ahead of the Seahawks for first place in the NFC West at 7-3 thanks to owning the current tiebreaker. Of course, there’s plenty of football left in the NFC West. In fact, the Rams play four of their final six games against divisional foes, including two games with the upstart Arizona Cardinals.

Los Angeles (+110) is favored to win the NFC West, per FanDuel Sportsbook. However, the Seahawks (+105) are favored to win the division over the Rams (+115) on BetMGM.

While he can be rough around the edges at times, quarterback Jared Goff is playing some of his best football of the past two years. Without much help from his running game on Monday, Goff threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns. In fairness, he also threw two interceptions, giving him eight picks in 10 games this year. The bright side is that it was Goff’s third-straight game with over 300 passing yards.

Goff's passing yards prop against the San Francisco 49ers is set at over/under 268.5 total air yards, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Defensively, the Rams have to be pleased with where they sit right now. To date, Los Angeles has allowed the second-fewest points in the NFL and are averaging over three sacks per game. More importantly, they're relatively healthy on defense, which has helped them maintain a high level of play on that side of the ball.

No Garoppolo

It’s now or never for the reigning NFC champs. The 49ers were nursing a three-game losing streak before a much-needed bye last week. San Francisco (4-6) sits in last place in the NFC West, 2.0-games out of a wild card spot. They have one game left against each of the teams ahead of them in the NFC West. If the 49ers have a late playoff push in them, they’ll have to do it the hard way.

As Jimmy Garoppolo continues to nurse his second high ankle sprain of the season, Nick Mullens serves as starting quarterback. Mullens isn’t flashy or good enough to be a regular starter, but he’s surely a capable backup. The problem for the 49ers is that injuries have ravaged their backfield and the rest of their offense. Their offensive line is hurting and unable to create enough of a rushing attack to take the heat off the quarterback.

Without Garoppolo this season, the 49ers have gone 1-3 ATS and their over/under record stands at 2-2. San Francisco (+6.5) receive a similar spread to their battles against the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, it's been a similar story on defense, as one key player after another has been placed on IR or suffered a serious injury. The result is a defense that’s giving up 32.6 points per game over their last three games. The only silver lining is that San Francisco held Los Angeles to just 16 points when the teams met earlier this year. Replicating that kind of performance on the road could be difficult.

Home Field Dominance

The 49ers are facing an uphill battle against the Rams this week. Keep in mind that Garoppolo played one of his best games of the season against Los Angeles in a 24-16 win in October. San Francisco was able to win the battle at the line of scrimmage in this game, which won’t be easy to do this time around. The Rams are 4-0 at home this season.
