Arizona Cardinals Preview

The Seattle Seahawks are one of just 3 undefeated teams in the NFL. Seattle is 5-0 due to a high-powered offense that has finally let Russell Wilson show off his talent. In the recent past, the Seahawks’ coaching staff has been criticized for running a conservative, ball-control offense. This year, they have passed more on early downs and given Wilson the opportunity to carry the team. Seattle passes on 60.93% of their offensive plays this season, up from last year’s rate of 54.02%. They have been rewarded with an undefeated record and the best offense in the NFL. Week 5’s 27-26 thrilling win over the Minnesota Vikings was the first spread Seattle failed to cover this season. Seattle’s 4-1 record ATS is tied for the NFL’s best. Each of their first 3 games went over the betting total, but their last 2 games have gone under. Offensively, the Seahawks gain 6.6 yards per play. The Seahawks have scored 33.8 points per game through 5 games. Seattle ranks #1 in both yards per play and scoring offense. Thanks to Russell Wilson, Seattle leads the league with 19 touchdown passes, 3 more than any other team. They are #1 in the league in TD passes despite the fact they’ve played 1 fewer game than most others. They have also been the best red zone offense in the NFL, scoring touchdowns on 88.9% of their red zone trips. The only flaw in their offense appears to be their 3rd down play. Seattle ranks 31st in 3rd down conversion percentage, getting first downs on just 32.6% of their 3rd down opportunities. Defensively, the Seahawks have actually been quite poor. This is not one of Pete Carroll’s vintage defenses. The Seahawks rank 30th in yards per play allowed (6.2 ypp). Seattle ranks 19th in scoring defense, giving up 27.0 points per game. They are 28th in net yards allowed per pass attempt and defensive 3rd down conversion percentage. Most of their defensive numbers are poor, but there are a couple of things that the Seahawks defense does well. They rank 7th in yards per rush allowed, so their run defense is strong. They also rank 3rd in turnover percentage, forcing takeaways on 17.9% of their opponents’ offensive drives

Seattle Seahawks Preview

Many football observers saw the Arizona Cardinals as a potential sleeper coming into the 2020 season. QB Kyler Murray had a fairly impressive rookie year and looks much improved in his 2nd-year campaign. Murray seems comfortable with the speed of the NFL game and with Kliff Kingsbury’s Air Raid offense. Arizona added WR DeAndre Hopkins in the offseason to a stacked WR-corps that already included Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald. After going 5-10-1 SU in 2019, the Cardinals are off to a 4-2 SU start. There is still some question about how good they really are because of the low quality of their competition. After beating the defending NFC Champion 49ers in Week 1, their next 3 wins came against the Washington Football Team, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys. A win against the undefeated Seahawks would really catch the eye of folks around the league. Having covered in each of their 4 wins, the Cardinals also have a 4-2 ATS record. Despite the explosive weaponry they have, all 6 of their games have gone under the total. One reason for this might be the fact that Arizona is one of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL. They run the ball on 46.1% of their plays, the 9th-highest percentage in the league. The Cardinals rank 2nd in yards per rush, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Overall, they rank 9th in yards per play (6.1). They have been difficult to stop in the red zone, converting 80.0% of their red zone opportunities into touchdowns. Another key to Arizona’s surprising year is their dramatic improvement on defense. Last year, Arizona ranked 28th in yards per play allowed and scoring defense. This year, Arizona ranks 7th in yards per play allowed and 2nd in scoring defense. They give up just 18.7 points per game. Arizona is 7th in 3rd down defense and 2nd in defensive red zone touchdown percentage. The Cardinals allow just 5.7 yards per dropback, ranking 5th in net yards per attempt. It has been a huge turnaround for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s defense. Please continue reading our Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals prediction for a preview of the Seahawks.

Full Game Prediction

For Arizona to win this game, the Cardinals should deviate from their usual offensive game plan. Arizona loves running the ball, but this particular matchup calls for a version of the Air Raid offense in its more pure form. They could try to run the ball down Seattle’s throat, but stopping the run is the one thing Seattle can do well. Seattle will have an extremely difficult time stopping a 4-WR, 1-RB set with all of Arizona’s weapons and a mobile QB like Kyler Murray. Arizona should spread Seattle’s weak defense out and pick it apart. For Seattle to win this game, their offense must perform better on 3rd down. Seattle has been amazing on early downs this season, but they have struggled in 3rd down situations. Arizona’s defense has been great this season, so it’s unreasonable to expect Seattle to dominate early downs like they have most of the year. There will be moments when Arizona forces Seattle into key 3rd-and-8s and Russell Wilson will be asked to make a play. He has been so good on 1st and 2nd down, that he hasn’t faced this pressure much this season. However, he must summon some of his old 3rd down magic if the Seahawks want to stay undefeated.
