The love for tennis is growing! It's expanding so much that the betting market for the sport is bigger than ever. Let's cover some of the basics when it comes to betting on the sport.

Tennis Single-Match Bet Types

Tennis Moneylines

This is the most straight forward bet that you can make. You're simply choosing a winner for the match. In this example, Kontaveit (-271) is the favorite, while Kerber (+249) is the underdog. If you see a negative symbol (-), then the player is favored. If you see a positive symbol (+), then the player is an underdog for the match.

Favorite: The amount of money you must bet in order to win $100 on a successful bet. In the example above, you'd need to bet $271 on Kontaveit (-271) to profit $100.

Underdog: The amount of money you will win if your $100 bet is successful. In the example above, a $100 bet on Kerber (+249) would profit $249.

Tennis Spreads

In spread bets, a player must cover the listed margin. Negative numbers indicate the favored player in the match. For example, Kontaveit (-4.5) is favored and must win by more than 4.5 games in order to win the bet. Kerber (+4.5) can win the match outright, or she can lose by less than 4.5 games in order for the bet to be successful.

In the event that there are whole numbers, then a tie is possible. If Kontaveit was favored by 4 games (-4), then your bet can push if Kontaveit wins by 4 games exactly.

Tennis Totals (Over/Under)

Total bets are won and lost depending on the total number of games won by the two players combined. An Under bet is successful when the two players combine to score fewer than the listed number of points, while an Over bet is successful when the two players combine to score more than the listed number of games.

Example: Kontaveit vs. Kerber O/U 20

  • The Under is successful if the game points total 19 or less.
  • The Over is successful if the game points total 21 or more.
  • A push will occur if the two players produce exactly 20 game points.

Tennis Multiple-Match Bet Types

Parlay

Using parlays, you can combine multiple individual bets in order to increase your potential return. In order for a parlay bet to be successful, each individual bet must hit. If any single component is unsuccessful, the entire parlay will be graded as a loss. This style of betting appeals to bettors who eye exponentially larger payouts, but have much lower odds of winning.

Example: You place the following parlay bet: Kontaveit (-271) + Over 20. If Kontaveit doesn't win and the total game points doesn't exceed 20, then you won't win the bet. To win, both outcomes need to occur.

Other Tennis Bet Types

Futures

A futures bet refers to any bet that will be settled in the future.

Example: Player accolades (Grand Slams).

Prop Bets

A prop, or proposition, is a bet made regarding the occurrence or non-occurrence of a given event during a game. Sportsbooks attach odds to these bets and they can be settled before the game goes final.

Examples: Tiebreak winner, game correct score, game to go to deuce, match correct score, most games, etc.

Live Betting

Live betting takes place after the match has started and features in-game props and other bet types. This style of betting features the quickest payouts in the industry and puts bettors right in the action.
