Georgia State Trends

Heading into their season finale, the Georgia State Panthers have a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time all season. They’ve yet to get into much of a rhythm, which is why they are 4-4 overall, including 3-4 inside the Sun Belt. Without a win on Saturday, Georgia State will be all but guaranteed to finish in last place in the Sun Belt East Division, which would be a step backward after going to a bowl game last year.

Outside of losses to Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State, the Georgia State offense has been close to unstoppable this season. The Panthers have run the ball to great effect behind the tandem of Destin Coates and Tucker Gregg. Quarterback Cornelious Brown has also been helpful in the ground game, adding six touchdowns.

The over has hit in 5-of-8 Georgia State games, and the 52.5-point over/under line that they draw this week is their lowest of the season.

Unfortunately, the Panthers can’t rely on their defense to win games either. Georgia State has allowed an average of 34.0 points per game this year. Oddly enough, they’ve held their last two opponents under 20 points, which has been a step in the right direction. Needless to say, the Panthers need to keep up their strong play on that side of the ball. Spread supporters have capitalized of late, as the Panthers have covered in two of their last three.

GSU's Close Calls

At 6-3, Georgia Southern is one win away from securing a winning season for the third-consecutive time. The Eagles nearly got that win last week, only to fall one point short in a 28-27 loss to Army thanks to a blocked PAT. That kind of close game is emblematic of GSU’s season thus far. Seven of Georgia Southern’s nine games have been decided by seven points or less, including four games that have been decided by two points or less. That makes a 1.5-point spread in this game rather fitting, as they've covered in three of their last four.

The Eagles are one of the rare teams outside the service academies that runs the triple-option. GSU also has an experienced quarterback in Shai Werts orchestrating the offense, so his decisions are typically sound. Both Werts and running back J.D. King have amassed over 600 rushing yards this season, giving the Eagles a steady rushing attack. Of course, the Eagles are a little more willing to throw the ball than most triple-option teams. Werts has shown some improvement in that area this season, including two touchdown passes last week against Army, so defenses can’t simply sell out to stop the run. The over has hit in two-straight GSU games.

Game Line

This figures to be a fascinating game between two teams that have a budding rivalry. The two teams are similar in the sense that both like to run the ball but are inconsistent when it comes to the passing game. Ultimately, this game could come down to what team is able to surprise the other with big plays in the passing game, especially since both defenses are a little vulnerable against the pass.

Georgia Southern (-120) is favored by 1.5 point over Georgia State (+100) with the over/under set at 52.5 total points.
