Situation Before Kickoff

No. 13 Penn State moved to 3-0 on the season on Saturday afternoon after earning a 17-10 win against Pittsburgh at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions entered the game as 17-point favorites, but certainly received a scare from their in-state rival after going into halftime level at 10-10.

Penn State entered the contest having scored 124 points over their first two games of the season; victories over Idaho and Buffalo. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh suffered defeat against Virginia in their season-opener before bouncing back in Week 2 with a 20-10 win over Ohio.

Roughly 40 percent of the public bet was placed on Pittsburgh, despite the Panthers falling to the Nittany Lions 51-6 in their 2018 encounter.

Game Recap

For the Nittany Lions, head coach James Franklin’s team was carried by its rushing attack on Saturday with Penn State totaling over 160 yards on the ground. Journey Brown rushed for 109 yards, while Noah Cain and Devyn Ford added a touchdown apiece running the ball.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for 372 yards in the loss after attempting 51 passes in the contest.

The Panthers were forced to throw the ball a significant amount with the Nittany Lions defense cutting down the rushing attack. In all, Pittsburgh amassed 26 rushing yards. However, Vincent Davis recorded his team’s lone touchdown in the second quarter on the ground.

The visitors also missed a 19-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with the game still in reach. That miss gave the ball back to Penn State, who subsequently ran the clock down and secured the win.
