If there was any doubt in the head of college basketball bettors and sports fans whether the Purdue Boilermakers are legitimate title contenders, they certainly put that to rest over this past week. Not only do they deserve to be mentioned along with the likes of Gonzaga, UCLA and Kansas, they deserve to be ranked the best team in the nation.
Obviously, until Gonzaga loses, they will remain No. 1. However, you can certainly make the case for Purdue after blowing out Horizon League title contender Wright State by 44 points, and then taking down both No. 18 North Carolina and No. 5 Villanova back-to-back.
That is toughness and resiliency, and the Boilermakers have both to go along with some of the best talent in the nation. There are very few teams in the country that can compete with Purdue skill-wise, and even fewer who can match their hustle. This team plays hard each and every time out on the court for head coach Matt Painter, who is enjoying what is certainly his best group of players he has had at Purdue since his arrival in 2005.
You can get +1200 odds on Purdue to win the title right now at most sportsbooks, and to me, that is fantastic value for a veteran team that is extremely talented.
Purdue has a plethora of star players that shine brighter than a diamond on the basketball court. The Boilermakers have the most dominant post duo in the country with the ridiculously tall Zack Edey, who stands at 7-foot-4, and preseason All-American Trevion Williams. Together, they are almost impossible to guard down low.
Against high-level competition like North Carolina and Villanova, this pair was unstoppable. Williams wreaked havoc late in the game against the Tar Heels, destroying them in the post and solidifying a Purdue win. Against Villanova, Edey looked like a man among boys, just whipping the Wildcats all game long. They had zero answer for his size. When you combine the two games, Edey had 30 points in 38 minutes, while Williams had 29 points in 33 minutes.
Sophomore guard Jaden Ivey will most likely be a lottery pick in the NBA Draft coming up, and he has blossomed into a superstar who can dish out the ball with the best of them. His growth has been what has made Purdue a legit title contender, and he was dominant in the two games against North Carolina and Villanova. He registered 13 assists in two games, turning the ball over just twice.
Not only do they have these three stars that can bring them to the forefront of college basketball, but they also have a bunch of great players around them that can shoot. They have made double-digit 3-pointers in four of five games this season, and went 10-for-23 against both North Carolina and Villanova.
This is a team that, for now, is undervalued. They can beat Gonzaga, and that would be a fantastic match. Look out for Purdue.
