Florida State Basketball Futures Following Baba Miller Commitment

Florida State basketball has had its ups and downs over the past few years. At times, they have looked like National Championship contenders, and at others, they have looked like one of the worst teams in the ACC. The roster for the 2022 season is starting to take shape, with a lot of young guys that will be looking to prove themselves at the next level. The Seminoles lost their entire starting five in the offseason, so it will be a challenge to contend with some of the more veteran teams.

In 2022-2023, leading scorers Caleb Mills and Matthew Cleveland will both return for the Seminoles, who went 17-14 overall and 10-10 in the SEC last season, a down year for a perennial NCAA Tournament team. Two four-star recruits, Cameron Corhen and De'Ante Green, will join the program, as will transfers Darin Green (UCF) and Jaylan Gainey (Brown). Head coach Leonard Hamilton has a very deep roster that he will have at his disposal, but perhaps the biggest addition to the team will be recently committed power forward Baba Miller, a prized international signing.

Miller is 6'10 and comes already battle-tested after playing for the Real Madrid B-squad club since signing with the team at just 12-years-old. Being around that type of environment since being a child, Miller will come equipped with the basketball knowledge he needs to succeed in the professional environment that will be demanded of him at Florida State. It came down to the Seminoles and basketball powerhouse Gonzaga in a bid for his services, but he ultimately chose Florida State (the Seminoles have a habit of getting guys to the NBA very quickly, like Patrick Williams most recently). He should make an immediate impact on the team with his unique skill set at his position.

According to his recruiting profile at 247sports, he can shoot from anywhere on the court, including three-point range, while also being able to traditionally post up underneath. He's versatile and can play almost any position, as his ball-handling skills are very impressive for someone of his size.

His signing didn't have too much of an effect on the Seminoles futures market, though. Florida State is currently a longshot to win the National Championship, sitting at 80/1 to cut down the nets. This is a group of young players that will be challenged by more experienced athletes, but they do have the talent and skills necessary to compete against that type of competition. At 80/1, it may be worth a very small wager with how good this recruiting class was, but truth be told, I believe they are too young and inexperienced as a team to win a championship.
