The Troy Trojans (3-2 SU, 4-1 ATS, 3-2 O/U) and San Diego State Aztecs (5-2 SU, 2-4-1 ATS, 5-2 O/U) meet on Monday night in a non-conference matchup.
Troy is an interesting team this year because if you look at KenPom ratings, they’re expected to finish the season near the bottom of the Sun Belt Conference. But they’ve beaten Florida State and led Arkansas at the half. While I don’t think they’re going to win this game, I do think they can put up plenty of points. The Trojans are averaging 81.7 points per game, which is good for 39th in the country. San Diego State is also a team that knows how to score, averaging 79.8 points on the season. They’re also coming off a game in which they put up 95. This should be a high-scoring affair tonight in San Diego, so I’m taking the over.
My pick: Over 137.5
The Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-2 SU, 1-5 ATS, 4-2 O/U) welcome the Kent State Flashes (5-2 SU, 7-0 ATS, 2-5 O/U) to the Kennel tonight.
Kent State has had a relatively good start to their season and a lot of that stems from the fact that they returned four of their five starters from last year's squad. They recently lost to then No. 2-ranked Houston by just five points, showing that they’re capable of hanging with the big dogs. In that game, they held Houston to just 49 points, which is what they need to do against Gonzaga if they want a chance to win. Their defense is what they hang their hats on and that’s going to allow them success against the Zags' high-powered offense. The Flashes rank 12th in 2-point percentage defense and have a very strong, physical interior unit. They are also great at forcing turnovers, which has been an area of concern for Gonzaga. Overall, I think 15.5 points is too many to give a scrappy, physical team like Kent State.
My pick: Kent State +15.5
The Albany Great Danes (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS, 4-2 O/U) take on the UMass Minutemen (6-1 SU, 5-1-1 ATS, 2-5 OU) in a non-conference game at William D. Mullins Memorial Center.
This matchup is between two teams that aren’t very good on the defensive side of the ball. Albany is allowing an average of 73.7 points per game on 49.6% shooting. They have been particularly bad on the road this year, giving up 88 and 99 points in their last two games away from home. The lack of defense is something that UMass will be able to take advantage of being the Minutemen are shooting 43% from the field and nearly 40% from 3-point range right now. I typically don’t like to rely on trends or take them into account too much, but the fact that the Great Danes are 4-0 to the over in their last four road games makes me more comfortable with a play on the over. Plus, our BetQL model agrees with me.
My pick: Over 139.5
